Description

'A deserted island... a lost man... memories of a fatal crash... a book written by a dying explorer.' Dear Esther immerses you in a stunningly realised world, a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides. As you step forwards, a voice begins to read fragments of a letter: 'Dear Esther...' - and so begins a journey through one of the most original first-person games of recent years. Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses its beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt and redemption. Key features: • Every play-through a unique experience, with randomly generated audio, visuals and events. • Explore incredible environments that fully immerse you in the haunting island and its mysterious past. • A poetic, semi-randomised story like you've never experienced in a game before. • Stunning soundtrack composed by Jessica Curry, featuring world-class musicians. • An uncompromisingly inventive game delivered to the highest AAA standards. Dear Esther: Landmark Edition has been remade with the Unity engine, featuring a full audio remaster, and the addition of a brand-new Directors' Commentary mode, allowing players to explore the island and learn what inspired the game and how it was crafted by The Chinese Room and Rob Briscoe. Requirements: • OS: 10.7.5 or later • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo (2 * 2260) or equivalent • Memory: 2 GB RAM • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 (256 MB) • Storage: 2 GB available space

  • I Want More!

I have searched in vain for more explorative games like this one. I love it! It's just you on an island. The sound of the waves, wind and your footsteps as you explore. You'll go through a series of underground caverns that are so realistic and beautiful. I really could not believe the graphics. I only wish it were longer.

I fell in love with the MYST games. This is very true to Dear Esther. The graphics are the best I have seen. As others have said...this is NOT a game win, but an environment to explore and to get lost in. If you want to just "escape" from the stresses of the day, this is the experience for you. You become a part of this "art film". The only rquest I have is that I could explore MORE of this wonderful world. I feel that I am on a designated path. Could I go up the mountains or out the back doors of the buildings? I would love to explore inside the ships and containers. I have a MAC, I would love to Download "Everybody's gone to the Rapture" for Mac. THANK YOU
  • This game is Fine Art

I can’t say I’ve completed this game. There are no Zombies to shoot, no byte-crafted characters, no tricky-clickety puzzles to solve. Doing something stupid, like walking into the Ocean is the only way I’ve found to die…and even then you’re resurrected. What’s the point? I’m not yet sure, but IT’S THE MOST GRAPHICALLY BEAUTIFUL, MOST SKILLFULLY ANIMATED, MOST THOUGHTFULLY CONCIEVED, AND HAS THE FINES SOU8NDTRACK, BOTH MUSICALLY AND FUNCTIONALLY, OF ANY GAME I’VE EVER SEEN! If I do nothing but wander through this magnificently contrived world, I’ll consider the price of admission “money well spent”. Congrats to everyone involved.
  • Just awful

Irredeemably bad in so many ways. I’m a sixty five year old woman and cannot begin to count the number of eye rolls I performed during this tedious, boring game. “Artistic” in this case is not an excuse for absolutely nothing happening at all. Shame on the people that made this crap for wasting my time and money; insulting my intelligence with horrible dialogue that made no sense. “Come back”… never in a million years.
  • Pretty Grasses

"Dear Esther" or “Listening to a clinically depressed man.” Art? The grass is pretty. Feelings Evoked? Only feeling I had was boredom. You are limited to where you can go. And nothing happens. Just every once in a while a depressing man speaking in monotone dreary voice makes statements with little meaning. This is poorly written. The only thing good about it is nicely drawn grasses swaying in the wind. I want to do you a favor. So I’m telling you, "Dear Esther" is a waste of time and money no matter what you call it—“first person game”—"story driven experience”—art. I feel very foolish buying and playing this thing.
  • Great graphics. Ridiculous gameplay!

Wandering around with no guidelines and lack of visual progress. Game crushes simultaneously! Total waste of money!
  • Such an experience…..

As the other reviews indicate this is not as much a game as an experience or an art film. I don’t usually invest in such things but it was a staff pick and had high ratings so I gave it a go. You don’t get a lot of guidance as to what to expect or what to do--really not any guidance, actually--but that’s an important part of the experience. Even without guidance, you naturally and quickly find your way into the story. It was so beautiful and more emotional than even the best-written shoot ‘em ups, and honestly more emotional than most films.
  • Visually Beautiful, not a game

This is visually beautiful and I enjoyed most of it. The cave parts left me feeling a little claustrophobic. But it isn’t a game. I wasted too much time trying to understand the diagrams because I thought I’d have to solve something.
  • A Stunning Adventure

Well worth the money just for the experience. In a world where so much of life moves way too fast this game / experience take you away from it all. It’s like a existential dream walk one might have had as a child. I loved it.
