Description

Can a wanna-be hero like you rescue the city of Kendrickstone, held hostage by an evil wizard and his troop of black-clad soldiers? Face down fierce foes with spell, sword, or silver tongue. Outwit cunning rivals, cement your fledgling reputation, and maybe, just maybe, make enough money to pay your rent! “The Hero of Kendrickstone” is an epic 240,000-word interactive fantasy novel by Paul Wang, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination. Step into the shoes of a fledgling adventurer in a world full of magic and mystery! Master physical combat, magic, stealth, or diplomacy. Choose to befriend–or betray–sorcerers and knights, bandits and baronesses. Will you spend the last of your silver on a bed for the night, or potions for your next adventure? Will you spend your evenings studying ancient secrets, or prize-fighting for extra coin? Will you seek a mentor to help hone your skills, or strike out on your own? Will you prove to be a paragon of compassion, or a callous mercenary? Will you die forgotten and un-mourned, or will you become the Hero of Kendrickstone?

I suppose it depends on the reason you are playing, but for me I was pretty underwhelmed and couldn't finish it. There's barely any character relationships (whether romantic or platonic), and very little time invested in fleshing out side characters. Also, as an adventure game, I was expecting maybe a group of friends you collect along the way (warrior, rogue, mage, etc), but I got pretty far in to it and was still alone for all of it. Because I didn't finish it, it's possible this changes later on, but I felt I played far past long enough to get the flow of how the game was going. I did like the world-building and the gender diversity of passing characters, though.

Another game where you are not forced into interactions with lgbt characters. A step up from what choice of usually does. Any game that doesn't force you to be around characters you wouldn't hang around in real life is okay in my book. I just want a sequel.

I am a fan of the choice of games stories. I really enjoyed this fantasy game/story. It really felt like they gave me meaning full choices and I was not forced too choose one; just because it would make writing the story easier. I was truly immersed into this world.

Well written, engaging, and highly customizable/replay able. 1 star removed for protagonists awkward transition to importance at the end. Easily recommendable, however.
  • Mediocre and too heavily priced

I love most of the games these guys put out. But Kendrickstone, while not horrible is not worth 6 dollars. It's a totally average game. It should've been priced at around 2 or maybe 3 bucks. I suggest only purchasing this if the price goes down because otherwise I'm sorry to state that it's a waste otherwise.
  • Okay-ish

Was in the mood for a generic medieval fantasy setting so I picked this one up. It's okay compared to other choice games but didn't capture me. The writing was fine but the game elements felt very tacked on as if it didn't matter what my actual stats were in most cases. That said the ending is amateur hour and unforgivable. After playing for several hours the final boss fight amounts to "a pick the right choice because I'm the author and this is what I say needs to happen," event. I didn't pick the right choice and was given a prompt "you died" screen. No epilogue, no interesting details about what my characters death and failure meant for the rest of the generic fantasy world, nothing. There are many better choice games out there and this one is not worth your time unless you've played all those other ones.
  • Too short for the price

An okay game, although a bit hard to grow attached to the characters. Too short for the price tag.
