Description

INCLUDED IN BEST OF 2014 “Few iOS apps are as thoughtfully designed as Molecules, and even fewer combine superb visuals with clear writing that encourages exploration.” – Macworld “Molecules uses its predecessor as a springboard to further greatness.” – Stuff A book about molecules, and a chance to touch, stretch and twist them! Molecules by Theodore Gray is the extraordinary sequel to The Elements, the bestselling book and app. It continues the story of the elements to show how they are assembled into the rich diversity of compounds, chemicals, molecules, rocks, and stuff that make up our world. The app includes an important world first: a touch-interactive molecular dynamics simulation that lets you poke and prod hundreds of different molecules, seeing how each one reacts to your touch. Molecules are not static things – they twist, turn, vibrate, and spin in an elaborate and beautiful dance of quantum mechanics. The app incorporates the NAMD simulation engine developed by the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois. These are serious, scientifically accurate simulations. A few minutes playing with them will give you a deeper intuition about the true nature of molecules than years of study on paper. And while they are serious science, they are also a whole lot of fun to play with! In addition to the amazing wiggling molecules, the app contains the entire book of Molecules, with all the objects interactively rotatable so you can see them from all sides. Going further than The Elements, the app includes dozens of innovative and intriguing “still life videos” that reveal the true nature of substances through close-up interactive video. Features include: • Try out the first ever touchscreen-interactive molecular dynamics • Bend, squeeze and shape 348 different molecules using multiple fingers • Increase or decrease the temperature and see how molecules react • Read the full text of all 14 chapters of Molecules by Theodore Gray • Understand the movements of molecules in a special chapter for the app • See over 500 videos and rotations of incredible objects photographed by Nick Mann If you like Molecules by Theodore Gray, don’t forget to rate it and leave a review.

10/10 molecule physics! This app is awesome

The latest update has caused the touch input to be off when interacting with the molecules on iPhone XS Max Update: I saw the developer response and I have emailed them with the requested information and details and am awaiting a response or update. I have changed to 3 stars for good customer support and will update back to 5 stars when the bug is resolved.
  • Very disappointing

Honestly, it feels like the dev copy/pasted info from Wikipedia, put it in an app with a cool color scheme and overpriced it shamelessly. It's essentially a trivia app full of info you could get elsewhere but priced as though it were a professional/educational tool.

Absolutely fantastic app. The book is well written, and the interactive simulations are fantastic. I love how they are integrated with the book. I use NAMD (which is actually running the simulations) for my research. Being able to interact with these molecules on through the touch screen is incredible. The app has style. It's fast, intuitive, and altogether awesome. A hell of a lot of work went into this app and it shows. Highly recommended for all.

  • IT NEEDS BETTER EDITING

I DO LOVE THE STORY “MOLECULES” TELLS AND THE GRAPHICS ARE VERY NICE INDEED. THERE ARE TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS I SAW WITH THE APP. ONE IS THAT THERE ARE SOME MOLECULES THAT ARE TOTALLY WRONG IN HIS LIBRARY. TETRAHEDRANE, THE CHLOROPHYLLS, CYANOCOBALAMIN AND POSSIBLY OTHERS HAVE INCORRECT MOLECULAR STRUCTURES. IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW THEY WERE GENERATED BUT THEY CERTAINLY WEREN’T EDITED BY A CHEMIST. I AM CONCERNED THAT SINCE THESE OBVIOUS ERRORS WERE NEVER EDITED AND FIXED THAT THERE MAY BE MORE IN THE FILES OF MOLECULES THAT HAVE INCORRECT MOLECULAR STRUCTURES. THE SECOND CRITICISM I HAVE IS THAT THE INORGANIC MATERIALS ARE REPRESENTED AS A SET OF ATOMS IN THE EMPIRICAL FORMULA IN SOMETIMES A RANDOM ORDER AND NOT THE SOLID STATE STRUCTURES (FROM THE X-RAY STRUCTURES) WHICH CAN BE SHOWN QUITE NICELY IN THREE DIMENSIONS. IF THESE ITEMS WERE FIXED I WOULD CHANGE MY REVIEW TO 5 STARS.
  • It’s ALIVE!

Most molecules apps I’ve seen don’t make things nearly this digestible or as fun. They usually have cold/dead models of molecules, but the interactive, living, dynamic models this provides completely changed how I viewed molecular structure and made it so much more fun and interesting.
  • Awesome!

This app is amazing! If you want this app for the interactions, don't get it. The book, on the other hand, is amazing! It is very informative and interesting. I'm not sure I would pay $14.99 for it, but I got the sale price of $2.99. Sooo worth it!
