Description

Selected by Apple as Best of 2014, and winner of the 2015 Digital Book Award for Best Nonfiction App. Bestselling author Professor Ian Stewart is your guide through Incredible Numbers. Numbers define the patterns of sunflowers; they bring pleasure through music; and they help us answer existential questions like; ‘How many ways are there to lace my shoes?’ Interactive examples – from simple equations to a working Enigma machine – put the beautiful concepts behind mathematics at your fingertips. “A measure of Ian Stewart’s success is that he’s able to give a clear path through some very hairy mathematics.” – Times Higher Education Supplement There’s so much more than a few screenshots can show: – 23 articles crafted by Prof. Ian Stewart, embedded with 71 groundbreaking interactive demonstrations. – 23 bespoke interactive sections that let you immerse yourself in the beautiful patterns and concepts behind each topic. – 15 of Ian Stewart’s famous mathematical puzzles. Topics include: • Infinity – Explore infinity and understand what it really means to say something is infinite. • Pi – Unwrap the mysteries of pi to see why this strange number is so important and why it’s not just about circles. • Music – Music and math share the beauty of finding patterns in complexity. Detailed interactives show you how they relate in real, meaningful and fun ways. • Codes – See how the power of numbers can unlock complexity in codes. • Nature – See how numbers work in nature by looking at the Fibonacci sequence and how it appears in the real world in beautiful and surprising ways. • Primes – Discover the mysterious patterns in prime numbers, and why they are so important. • Polygons – Get to grips with shapes and polygons. Classical geometry is just another way to think about numbers! • Factorials – How many ways can you lace your shoes? Did you know that if you have 4 eyelets, there are 24 possible lacing styles? With 12 eyelets there are 479,001,600 possibilities. See why this is so in Factorials! Incredible Numbers aspires to convince you that maths is beautiful. Mathematicians know this already. The great solutions and proofs shine to them, but their underlying beauty has been hidden behind abstract algebra and complex equations. Until now. My 10 Year Old Son is really into Math at School. Go Figure. Myself? At Age 52, this program has taught me that what I do Not know about Numbers is vast...but this software is actually entertaining, he can't put it down and even I am amazed by it. When my Son let's me check it out of course...

As usual good looking app from touch press. But very low on content.
  • Nice try but not enough material

This is a very greedy application. The price is too high and the amount of material is too low. But it is stylish. Also audio explanations would be much better then plain text.

Stop whining. My seven year old loves this app. If you like math you'll like this. Don't expect it to turn you into a math whiz if you already dislike math.
  • I Should Have Listened

I should have listened to the other reviews and not bought this. I thought I could use it to teach my 16 year old some math because I am by no means a mathematician. I hated math growing up and this app just made me hate it even more.

For the math majors: Nice interactive features you will enjoy even if you already know the content; But even if you think you might, you'll most likely be reminded of a thing or two you missed or forgot! Great math app. Would love to see more like this.
  • Not for the kids

I bought this thinking it would help explain/make math fun for my older children. No. This is definitely for adults that like to play with math. I am one of those, fortunately, so the app isn't a total waste of money. I am sorely disappointed that my older children can't make good use of it though. There don't seem to be any apps out there for them!
  • Wonderful App

Amazing app and one of the best examples of modern app design that I have seen. A new way to look at and learn math concepts.

Beautiful presentation of some awesome content. Makes math accessible in a way that showcases the iPad's true potential.
  • Little explanations and few interactives!

I was expecting, as most of who's this app is targeted for as i would think, a clear explanations of some of the its topics that satisfy someone without a mathematical background, by using many interactive lessens. But instead, this app has few interactives and its mostly an abridged text that can only be fully understood by someone who is already familiar with the topics and thus mostly would not bother with this app. This not how a "Touch Press" app should be.
