Description

Archimedes is a Markdown editor designed to make mathematical writing easy with inline LaTeX support. MARKDOWN EDITING At its core, Archimedes is a fully-featured plain text and Markdown editor. It includes a fast syntax highlighter and provides convenient keyboard shortcuts for common actions, such as inserting images and links. With complete support for Markdown, Archimedes makes formatting and structuring documents elegant and easy. MATH MODE + AUTOCOMPLETE In Math Mode, Archimedes lets you write mathematics in a subset of LaTeX. Just enter $$ to get started. Over 700 intuitive commands, such as \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}, help you produce stunning mathematical output. Archimedes even autocompletes commands and intelligently matches closing braces, brackets, and parenthesis as you type. MAGIC TYPE Just getting started with LaTeX syntax? Don't know the code for the asymptotically equal symbol? Use your MacBook's trackpad or Magic Trackpad to draw it! Archimedes will recognize the symbol and insert the corresponding code for you. LIVE PREVIEW As you work, a beautifully-typeset live preview of your document is always visible. You can even switch between horizontal or vertical orientation and select a custom theme, and Dark Mode is fully supported. Themes come with various font faces. MATH LIBRARY Browse the math library to see all available LaTeX commands and their previews in one place. MACROS Archimedes lets you define macros -- or custom commands -- for the expressions you work with the most. Macros show up in autocompletion results right alongside built-in completions. NAVIGATOR Working on a long document? Use the Navigator to pull up a table of contents and quickly jump between sections. SHARING Share your work with the rest of the world via email, iMessage, or AirDrop. Or export a PDF or HTML document to disk. ERROR CHECKING New to TeX? Archimedes checks for errors as you type to help you write error-free mathematical expressions. STATISTICS View document statistics such as character count, word count, and reading time. SEARCH Use the Find panel to find and replace text in any document. KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Take advantage of keyboard shortcuts to quickly navigate the app. SNIPPET EDITOR The Snippet Editor allows you to typeset mathematical expressions without the overhead of a full Archimedes document. Use the Copy Vector button to export the typeset math as a vector graphic. SYNC Sync documents with Archimedes for iPad over iCloud and resume your work right where you left off.

  • Great Editor, not perfect though

I have been using this app daily and it really is an awesome editor and piece of software, However, I would like to see stuff such as the ability for a dark mode or choose different colorschemes. I also think the ability for other fonts would be a cool idea. Love the app so far though!
  • Not worth it :(. Wasted my 10 dollars :(

It was not worth it. I tried it and was disappointed.
  • Works as advertised

I’m not sure what the one star reviews are about. If you read the description it says that the application supports LaTex and Markdown for mathematical writing and doesn’t claim to be a full up TeX editor. If you’re looking for a full TeX editor grab TeXstudio or Texmaker. This app works fine for Markdown and lets you include LaTex for writing mathematical equations.

Despite what the title suggest this app doesn’t edit or open Latex Files.
  • Can’t open .tex files?

Whats the point if I can’t open .tex files?
  • Concerns about new non-standard file format

The latest version saves files in a “new, more capable” and “future-proof, package-based” file format. This is exactly what I don’t want. Latex and markdown in ascii files ARE future proof. I specifically want files that can be edited on, say, an iPad and is accessible on some other device belonging to collaborators who don’t use macs. The release notes do say that ascii files may still be used, but new features may not be available. This is exactly the sort of fragmentation Latex and markdown try to avoid, and I think it is unwise for a small developer to introduce a new file format to wrap around them, however well-meant. My previous review was 5-star, but no to this version.
  • I use this app every day - highly recommended.

Archimedes is very, very good at what it does. Some have pointed out that it’s not a full featured LaTeX tool; true, but there are many tasks that call for a short note, letter, email or even a brief article and these can be done quickly and efficiently with Archimedes. A math form reference, a math symbol finder, and command completion are all built-in and are as good or better than anything I’ve tried. I appreciate that I don’t have to leave the OSX infrastructure to write. I have recommended this to colleagues and students, even those who are not experienced with TeX, and they are always amazed that, for a very modest price, they can load one app and be productive right from the start. Another big positive for me is that Archimedes’ rendered PDF is quite good: clean, modern and readable. I highly recommend this app, and I hope Matt Rajca continues development of this excellent product.
  • Good app, but misleadingly advertised

This is an elegant app, and very handy. But as it’s advertised as a “LaTeX and Markdown editor”, I would expect it to fully support LaTeX functionalities. It turns out, however, this is just a markdown editor with LaTeX syntax support.

it lacks many many functions or symbols. I really regret buying this app.
  • Great for drafting notes, blog posts, and online replies.

Under the hood, Archimedes uses MathJAX, a JavaScript math typesetting engine that implements a subset of LaTeX for displaying math. MathJAX is widely used online, so what you write in Archimedes displays on your blog, Piazza, MathOverflow, etc. Archimedes features like live preview, inline error messages, symbol drawing, and tight OS X integration make drafting such snippets much less frustrating than using a plain text field. Unfortunately, MathJAX doesn’t support document layout features of LaTeX. Archimedes as of 1.3.2 is thus currently unsuitable for typesetting documents with TeX. It would be nice in a future release to see some integration with traditional TeX distributions like MacTeX.
