  • Shame on NYT

Slow, buggy, freezes without explanation, hard to navigate, not the complete newspaper, no offline capabilities. The list of the app deficiencies goes on and on. This has nothing to do with the content of the newspaper itself (which at times seems questionable, eg Wirecutter … really are we expected to believe these product ‘reviews’ are anything more than the personal preferences of a few writers)? The app is a daily reminder to this many-decades subscriber to the NYT to question why he continues his subscription. Update: (Dec 13, 2023) Even more awful with each update. Previous comment focused on deficiencies. Now it just doesn’t work. If an Ad doesn’t download immediately, the App freezes in place and doesn’t allow scrolling beyond. Browsers solved this problem 25 years ago. Just an awfully designed and implemented piece of SW.
  • NYT is a good app, especially for games, but is a trash journal

I enjoy playing the games such as the wordle or the minis (crossword). However, the NYT is one of the worst, most one sided, biased, and inaccurate journals. It should be classified as fiction. NYT didn’t mention a Jewish student being hit in the eye with a flagpole at Yale, opting instead to get interviews and quotes from pro Palestinian protesters about their feelings instead of reporting on the facts. The journal also goes out of their way to frame Judaism in a bad light, as when students in universities complain about antisemitism it becomes “some Jewish students concerned about rising antisemitism. Some others say this is overblown” it can never just be bad thing happened to person and here’s the story. NYT approaches levels of fiction and delusion that are appropriately found in state funded North Korean propaganda, or Iranian IRGC material. NYT is an awful institution which sadly carries a respected name, but our society would benefit from severe overhaul or elimination of this once great newspaper.

I’ve deselected auto play, but videos still play when scrolling articles.

PLEASE SEE MY APRIL 2024 UPDATE BELOW. So disappointed with this app. It drains the battery on my phone so rapidly, I can barely finish scrolling through all the unwanted advertising to read the news. I can see the battery percentage tick down like a clock from 100% to zero in a matter of minutes. April 2024 - so, the app is more efficient re: power drain and I’ve upgraded my mobile platforms since originally writing this review; however, the continual emphasis, and waste of resources, on looping graphics and AI voices has become a real distraction to actual news delivery. I’m still disappointed and to the point of seriously considering dropping my subscription. I NEED A NEWS SOURCE, NOT MINDLESS LOOPING IMAGERY AND ENTERTAINMENT.
  • App freezes on open

On phone and tablet this app freezes when opened. You can’t scroll and need to close the app and try again. Repeat. Repeat. Third time lucky? Depends on how it’s feeling. Seems like an easy glitch to fix. Zero effort from their QA team. Also, please add an easily accessible download articles for offline reading feature. When on a flight, etc, it would be so helpful. Maybe some of that gaming $$ can help y’all invest in a better UX!
  • What’s wrong with the free press

NYT hides all the true news behind their paywall, while the misinformation is all free on the internet. The NYT only cares about profits, not informing the public.

Supporting terrorists. Normalizing insurrection. Attempting to out gay people. Really cutting stuff guys. Hopefully the next Polk award winner will document the execution of The NY Times staff, I’d read about that. ~20 year subscriber out
  • Completely broken when one tries to read a continuously updating story

    By mktev
I’m trying to read the updates from trump’s criminal trial in chronological order. I scroll down to the beginning of this morning’s updates, and I am able to read ONE before it scrolls down to before this morning, and every update from today is BLANKED OUT. No words at all. In other words, this app is basically broken for those types of stories. Fwiw the same thing happens when I try to read the updates in safari on my phone
