I LOVE DUOLINGO!!!! Ive taken Spanish as a class and learned nothing through the entire course. Then I heard about Duolingo and I learned more in one day than in my entire Spanish class.

I have taken the program with Babbel, and it never came close to what I’ve learned in Duolingo. I’ve actually learned so much in Duolingo because of its methods, and the repetition. I am so far beyond what I learned in the other program, that I actually look forward to learning more every day. It is very good at teaching. I DONT like the men talking about their husbands though; or women talking about their Wives or girl friends. Enough of that nonsense.

I really love duolingo. I like how we can comment and make friends. I think it would be good of they can teach us the alphabet of a new language too. Like the accent words and explain it more? Sometimes I am really frustrated with this and would say I would stop doing duolingo but it's actually kinda of cute. But I gwtfrustrated with the leader board, but it makes me feel good when I get in promotion zone. Good job, duolingo! Also loved duolingo on ice, Spanish or vannish, the funny ads on YouTube , and threatening notifications.

The Duolingo app is merely a way of connecting to their system, although the app does offer some additional things not available on the Duolingo website. My experience is that of an English speaker learning Spanish, although I’m sure most of the other languages are similar. The Duolingo system is amazing. A lot of thought and effort went into developing it. It contains a learning path broken down into Sections, Units, Levels, Lessons and Exercises. The individual exercises are a mixture of reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is just enough repetition to help the various concepts sink in. The listening component uses a variety of characters, each with a unique speaking style, ranging from the quite easy to understand to the almost illegible. (Much like real life) Most listening exercises offer a ‘snail’ button, which slows down the speech, in you don’t understand it at normal speed. Outside of the lesson path, there are side levels to help hone language skills. (These are not available on the web version) To keep it interesting, points are awarded for activities, and you are competing against other Duolingo users, and you can be promoted (or demoted) to a different League, depending on how many points you earn in a given week. There are daily, weekly, and monthly Quests pertaining to available activities, and some activities will earn you achievements. Achieving these can earn you Gems, which can be used to ‘buy’ certain items. There is also a Friend component, making the process social And so much more. Duolingo offers different subscription levels, but can be used for free. As to my own personal experience, I did not subscribe my first few months. I was able to advance down the lesson path, but this was limited as only a limited amount of mistakes were allowed, certain activities required that I spend Gems, and there was an annoying 30 second ad after every lesson. (Mostly about Duolingo) After my Streak hit 150 days, I decided it was worth the money, and signed up for a year. I don’t regret this decision, as it opened up quite a few new activities and will probably renew. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, this is an amazing system, and will help anyone get started learning a new language. That being said… I’m taking off one star for some recent changes to their Achievement system. In the past, it was clear how many activities were needed, and how many were left to go to go to the next level or complete an achievement. For some reason, this was taken away. Also, there’s a new Early Riser achievement that says ‘before 9’, but doesn’t actually start until 6. I’m taking off another star because of the way the (timed) side levels are currently designed. They are split between Match Madness, which is matching words and short phrases to their translation, and Rapid Review, which is everything else. You can earn up to three Stars on each side level. The third Star for Rapid Review is doable, but may take several attempts, but the third Star for Match Madness is physically impossible. The clock runs out well before the level completes, even if the matches are made as fast as they are generated. It is not possible to get the third Match Madness Star WITHOUT BUYING ADDITIONAL TIME!!!!! (keep reading) I’m taking off yet another star because of the ‘cost’ of the Timer Boost Power-Ups. One extra minute, to be used in any timed activity, cost 450 Gems. 1200 Gems can be purchased for $4.99, which means that on top of my subscription, I’d have to pony up $1.87 to buy one extra minute of time. Finally, I’m taking off one final star for the ratio of Gems earned against Gems spent. As mentioned above, a single one minute Timer Boost Power-Up costs 450 Gems. To a non subscriber, playing a side level costs 100 Gems. Other activities can be as little as 30 or 40 Gems. However, the system rewards you 5 Gems here, and 6 Gems there. You could say that Gems are handed out using an eyedropper, and redeemed using a bucket. Very frustrating. All in all, this should be a five star review, if not six, but certain business decisions made by the developers have dropped it down to one star. Hopefully these will some day be remedied so I can give the app the rating it deserves.
