Description

If you are planning a trip along the Chesapeake and Ohio Towpath, then don't leave without your C&O Companion. The information found on the popular BikeWashington.org canal website is now available in an app. Simply sync and go. No data connection required when you are on the path. While on the towpath, the C&O Companion will display your current location, and will help you find amenities along the way. It also has self-contained maps that do not require a data connection. In the event of an emergency, the C&O Companion will help identify your location, and the quickest way to reach help. Proceeds support the C&O Canal Trust Fund. ======================================= Troubleshooting: Less than 1-in-500 users have reported one of these problems with the application: a) Won't report location. If your app is stuck on "Finding Location" (and you are not in airplane mode), then this generally means that you did not allow the C&O Companion access to your current location. (A dialog box will ask your permission during first launch). This is easy to fix. Just open the "Settings" application (this app came with your device; it has the gray "Gears" icon) and look for "Location Services". Ensure that Location Services is ON, and that is has been enabled for the C&O Companion application. b) Sync never completes. Just one person reported that after pressing the Sync button, the download never completed. This is most likely due to a corrupted database. We fixed this by simply deleting the app and then using the iTunes application to reinstall the app from iCloud (no additional change is incurred for re-install). This procedure wipes out the database so you can start over fresh.

  • I did not buy this. Why was I just charged $2.99?

Dear James Menzies - please issue me a refund. I am in the painful process of trying to switch back to iPhone after 4 years using Android. It’s possible I tried to buy this app 4 years ago when I last had iPhone. But I have no clue why Apple charged me $2.99 this weekend, immediately after getting a new iPhone and reactivating my iCloud account. I did not search for or try to install this app. (Apple wouldn’t let me use my new phone unless I put in a valid CC number, so it was easy for iCloud to rip me off.) I went to iCloud to request a refund but it has no history of this app purchase. Well, it sent me an email about the charge so clearly Apple knows. (Pro tip - use limited use credit card numbers created at privacy dot com when sketchy companies like Apple request your CC number to keep on file.)
  • Not up to date

This would be very helpful but it is not kept up to date. It didn’t have the 45 min detour around Paw Paw tunnel or the other 1/2 hour detour further down the trail listed.

I just downloaded this app and I will be using it later this week when riding the C&O trail. It already knows my location even though I am across the country. It looks like it will be well used and very invaluable. Is there an app like this for the GAP trail?

This app works great out on the trail. Really helpful to have distance information to the necessary locations. Very fond of the emergency buttons as well. Thanks!

Just rode the C&O from Cumberland to DC for the second time, and it would have been nice to have this app 10 years ago! Stopped at Barron’s Store for ice cream and snacks, and talk with the Tyler family...it was the last day of the season as they were closing a bit early this year. I let them know about the app and they were happy to see it and the details being published for the store. Also used the app to plan exit and dinner at Buddy Lou’s in Hancock and check the trail status in a couple areas that were closed 10 years ago and one area the Tylers told me was a slight detour due to a washout of the trail. Otherwise it is a great reference and is up to date, and it does sync for me... Also used it to track down mile 0 marker that I missed 10 years ago. Great app and worth every penny!
  • Won’t sync

Just downloaded this app. Keeps telling me to sync for first time use. I’ve done that multiple times to no avail. I have the map section but no listings for amenities. Very frustrating especially since this isn’t a free app. Update August 4th. App now syncs. Wish it was done sooner before I completed my C & O trip but better late then never. I did enjoy the map function while on the trail
  • I Want a Refund

This app may have worked when first released - but in 2019 it does not work. I am unable to complete the synch for first use. Have removed the app and reinstalled twice to no avail. Would be happy to pay $2.99 if the app worked for the C&O trail as described - but with a corrupt database the app is useless. Save yourself the aggravation and do NOT buy this app. And James - if you read these reviews - I’d like a refund.
  • This app is terrible, $2.99 wasted

I really wanted to give this app a great rating after having seen it work on Android. I immediately downloaded for IOS only to find the app won’t sync, at all. Even after following direction to delete the app and rebooting phone to clear the database. Doing anything at all the app crashes. If I can’t use it it’s of no use. Total garbage and waste of $2.99. Questionable who it really supports. Oh, and no stars for this. Don’t buy it for IOS.

Buyer beware. I just bought this app and I can’t get the app to sync. No maps. Useless.

Was worth it just for a day. Going to use it in a few weeks to do the whole towpath.
