SomaFM's official internet radio player (for OSX 10.6 and above) gives you access to over 20 channels of commercial-free, underground/alternative music, programmed by DJs who are passionate about their genres. We feature the best in electronica, ambient, indie pop, americana, world and more. Soma FM began streaming in 1999 and thrives thanks to the support of our listeners. Our app allows you to: - Sort channels by Popularity, Genre or just see your favorites - See the name and artist of currently playing song and a history of songs played. - Bookmark songs you like and purchase them later - Get the latest news and happenings from SomaFM - Listen in the background while you use other applications - Listen to SomaFM without interrupting what you're doing in iTunes. For example, you can play an audiobook in iTunes while listening to music from the SomaFM player.

  • Has gotten extremely annoying...

Firstly, this is a great running app, quick, responsive, and utterly reliable. Great work to the developers and team behind it. However... the music has recently become quite irritating to listen to for any length of time. Now, this isn't necessarily Soma's fault, but since they are human curated stations, they could do a better job. I realize that it's hard to keep content fresh and relevant to their stations, but the recent trend of the "voiceover" lyric needs to stop - and the programmers need to cull these out of the playlists. You know the ones... usually some inane pseudointellectual nonsense or newage self-help babble. It's just stupid and unlistenable. I know many others who have turned off Soma because of this but just speaking for myself... you've lost a subscriber. Soma used to rock and can do better but not at the moment...

App works exactly as you expect it to - just great vibes and the absolutel TOP quality in music selection, 24/7. I have spent many memorable nights programming or just wasting time online while listening. Personally I love the CliqHop station but it's honestly hard to pick just one favorite. My favorite thing to have happened that I can't resist commenting about in this review: I once emailed the DJ (Rusty) and inquired about some super obscure artist that I was absolutely vibing to late one night - I was very pleasantly surprised that I got a reply within 12 hours, complete with an awesome story about the artist I was asking about. Even since then, I have randomly replied to some of the "newsletter" contact emails that come through once in a while, and it's really awesome to know that a real human is out there putting out carefully curated music radio - for free! - and those interactions are valuable, so thankyou for truly keeping it real, SomaFM & Rusty! You are all great & I hope you know how appreciative some of us (all of us?) are! Anyway to those reading this, download the app & find a vibe if you are undecided!! Above and beyond. Cheers!

SOMA FM excels where Srirus and Spotify fail.

The app itself works great. Simple UI and I never experience any problems with the streams. Been listening to SomaFM since 2007. I'm a big fan of cliqhop and groove salad (classic!) but love to dive into the other channels they provide on occasion. Please donate regularly to keep this gem alive.

Daily listener and montly donator. I have this app on all my devices. My only feedback is I wish the dedicated in-app AirPlay button would return, as it was nice to route Soma to my stereo while all other computer audio came out of my Mac's speakers. As of now you have to send all Mac audio to AirPlay.
  • Love the downtempo electronica

Could not find anything relating to talk radio shows. ..was looking for something related to Old Time Radio shows, but this app appears to cater to the "hip hop" millineal crowd. Lots of music but that's about it.
  • Grateful listener

Muisic you've never heard before narrowcast on a broad range of streams. An innovative and enjoyable arrangement. Thanks for keeping your listeners listening and learning about new genres and artists.

I've enjoyed Soma FM for many years. Time to say so here. The SomaFM.com site has been providing distinctive collections I’ve not seen anywhere else. Nicely packaged in various streams. Each stream is well-curated. The small company provides apps as an alternative to streaming over the Web. My own primary use is the ambient music streams, playing in the background when I am concentrating on computer programming work. Tip: For such focused work, try my favorite streams: Mission Control, Groove Salad Classic, Suburbs of Goa, Lush, and Space Station Soma. The Mac app and the iOS app both work very well. Simple user interface. Performance is quite reliable, I cannot remember any failure. Of course, you do need a reliable internet connection, as all the music is streamed continuously, not stored on your Mac. You can make a favorites list, to keep a handy subset of their 33 streams. The app displays the artist and song name as they play, in case you want to look into that piece. You can choose to display each song & artist in a Mac notification, they move song to song. You can choose the audio quality, and therefore bandwidth used. On the Mac app, your choices are: "Highest" is 128K AAC, and "Lowest" is 32K AAC. Both sound good, though I do notice the crisper details of the higher one. The streaming is provided free-of-cost. Our purchase of the app helps to fund the service, as do purchases on their branded products online store. And they take donations too.
