Description

* Unlimited free map downloads based on Ordnance Survey® OpenData, at 1:25,000 and 1:10,000 scales, and now also paid map downloads at 1:50,000, 1:25,000 and 1:10,000 scales, just like the paper maps. * 3D mode ideal for mountains. * Maps downloaded and saved for off-line use. * Mark waypoints, plan routes and record tracks. * Import and export GPX files. * Plot graphs of altitude and speed. * View your photos on the map. * Off-line place, street name and postcode search. After installing the app, please touch the '?' button to view instructions including how to download detailed maps. Northern Ireland is not included. The Isle of Man is included only at 1:250,000 (free) and 1:50,000 (paid). The Channel Islands are not included. Since 2010, Britain's national mapping agency Ordnance Survey has released a large amount of free map data. UK Map makes much of that data available in a single app. It includes 1:1M MiniScale® and 1:250k road maps, which are built into the app, and 1:25k district maps and 1:10k street maps for the entire country which you can download in 5km by 5km tiles. As the free O.S. data does not include footpaths, this app superimposes footpaths derived from volunteer-collected data from OpenStreetMap.org. These downloads are free of charge. In addition to the free maps, you can also purchase and download 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps that are just like the Ordnance Survey paper maps. You can also purchase 1:10,000 maps for selected urban areas which show more detail than the free 1:10,000 maps. Once you've downloaded the detailed maps that you need, an internet connection is not required. The app can load GPX files (for example, from websites, other apps and from nearby devices via AirDrop) and display waypoints, tracks and routes. You can also mark waypoints, plan routes and record tracks within the app, and export them. You can view graphs of altitude or speed along recorded tracks and routes. The app has a 3D mode that lets you view the terrain from any viewpoint, useful for visualising hills and mountains. The app also includes a searchable gazetteer containing over 250,000 place names, 850,000 street names and 1.6 million post codes. All of this data is built in to the app, so this search also works when there is no network connection. The app also supports the compass and GPS - on those devices that have them - to display your position, orientation and altitude. Paid maps are licensed for personal and non-commercial use only. This was a great app when it came out, but it needs updating. I would be willing to pay for an update if it were as good as the original.

I downloaded this map and have to say that no mapping app is less intuitive than this one. It uses up vast phone resources will little benefit. In spite of having paid $10 for it, I deleted it to conserve resources. What a waste of money!

We recently completed the Coast to Coast trail in Cumbria and North Yorkshire. We were never lost and always knew where we were thanks to this app. The combination of OS maps and Openmaps trail and path information provides an essential tool for the walker. Other comments complaining about the cost of this app are ridiculous. This app costs less than a single paper map yet covers the whole of Britain. Thank you for a superior product.

We used this app on a recent trip to the UK. It worked very well. App never had any issues getting location by GPS. Just be certain to download any detail maps you will need when you have an internet connection. (I occasionally found I had omitted a "corner" with details and only had the large map.) Internet access is NOT needed to use map with GPS - great out in the boonies. Detail maps are good enough to use for walking. Only drawback is that sometimes the road number labels were "off screen" for area you're looking at - sometimes scrolling was required to determine which way you wanted to go. App is not cheap, but it performed very well and was definitely worth the cost. Highly recommended.

This huge app, takes up a lot of memory and requires a long time to download detailed maps of each area you need. Worse, even after you have done that, the maps you have loaded are of no use if you aren't in a wifi area. Total waste of money. If there were a rating lower than one star, I would have used it.
  • Great detail

More detail than you get with a rental car map, so we were able to route around problem areas and go exploring on weekends. Loved it!
  • Indispensable!

I recently cycled from Land's End to John O' Groats. I took along paper maps, but this app was indispensable on the few occasions where I was doubtful about my location or just wanted to know how far up a hill I had come. It was especially useful in larger towns where it's easy to make navigation errors. Being able to download maps in advance of the trip, and turn off my phone's data connection (with the GPS still active) saved me huge data roaming charges, and gave me instant access to the maps when I needed them. I didn't have the app open all the time, but when I needed it, it worked, and it was fast. I had another app with me for "offline" GPS use, and it also worked well, but this was my go-to option. It's a pity the 1:50,000 scale maps Ordnance Survey maps aren't available (due to licensing differences) as they would provide interesting detail, but this app is nonetheless great value.

This app was exactly what my family needed during our last visit to England. We drove from London to York and never got lost once, thanks to this app and the rental cars gps (which occasionally malfunctioned). I don't visit the UK very often, but I am so glad I bought this app. I wish very much that there could be an offline US road map app even half as good as this app. Even just the East coast. Even just the North East. Please? You can spend hours lost in Boston or NYC when you can see the road you want to get to but can't figure out the right line of one way streets to go down to get to it. There is a market in the US for this type of map app. Please fill it. :)

Spent 2 weeks in Scotland with a car that wouldn't let our Garmin recharge. This was a perfect resource as it not only showed us where we were going but also surrounding points of interest. We were also able to use it on hikes and the downloaded Ordinance maps was great in detail. Would recommend to anyone with iPad going to the UK.
