Description

LoopBud is a super simple yet very powerful MIDI recorder and looper. You can work with unlimited patterns. Although the 4-bar loops are very fun, you can work with an unlimited number of bars on each pattern! LoopBud has two record modes, Add mode and New mode. The "add mode" keeps adding new notes on each loop-cycle. The "new mode" clears out the previous recording and lets you record freshly on each cycle. You can work very fast with those modes. If you make a mistake, don't worry, you can use the "undo" option and get everything back! LoopBud has quantization enabled by default. You can toggle quantizing by pressing the "quantize" button on the top-left side. You can also set the level of quantization from the settings menu. If you want to speed up or slow down the clock, you can do so by pressing the "clock" button on the top-left side. You can achieve different effects on your live performances without a new recording. You can also focus on a single bar by pressing the bar measure on the top. You can either record or loop a single bar - which is a unique feature of LoopBud. In the settings menu, you can edit the piano roll's lowest and highest notes. The notes on the piano roll is not editable. However, you can export MIDI from the settings menu, and do editing on your favorite piano roll editor app! LoopBud is not an audio app, it's a MIDI app. You need to connect a MIDI input and a MIDI output for LoopBud to work. You can do so from the settings menu in the standalone app. You can use the MIDI matrix editor on your DAW if you are using the AUv3 plugin. LoopBud also supports Ableton Link on the standalone app.

  • Lovely, Limited, Little App

A really great simplified take on Atom 2. The signal chain was easy to set up in AUM, but the choice of pattern changes via CC only was really disappointing. It requires one of N unreliable midi-converter apps to switch patterns. Other reviewers piped in with some more ideas to make this a fully usable part of a professional toolset, and it’s almost there.

This app only records midi, you can’t edit or dudge a note. It’s pretty useless. Reply: I think the term "MIDI looping" is misleading. I have never seen an app that has midi recording with no ability to edit. It's 5$, I won't lose any sleep. I am just trying to help anyone else who might be misunderstanding. My review is NOT USELESS! :)
  • Great developer, app still maturing

Updated Review (mid-April 2021) Very glad the new update addresses the app’s blocking of midi pitch and other controllers which I found particularly frustrating. However, until LoopBud offer minimal support of these necessary events in the loop itself, I can’t give more than 2.5 stars. Editing is a low priority, as long as users can record and overwrite pitch bend and mod as part of the loop. The developer deserves five stars for communication and rapid fixes!! I’ll happily upgrade my review and rating when the app is ready for primetime.... PS. A secondary feature request is a recording mode with undetermined loop length, allowing the user to jam and then find the loop. This would make the app much more usable in workflows such as mine... Old Review (early April 2021) I wanted to love LoopBud. The UI isn’t great but the app seemed to offer a great way to compose and export MIDI patterns. But sadly the app not only doesn’t support pitch bend or mod wheel events but it blocks them when it’s used as a MIDI filter (for example in Audiobus 3). I found this out the hard way, when trying to work with a riff that used pitch bend. The app developer replied to my email inquiry quickly and confirmed my findings. He indicated the feature is planned, but not in the immediate future. I am disappointed this fairly huge weakness wasn’t referenced in the app description, leading to terrible user experience. Players of midi controllers expect pitch bend and mod wheel to be supported, and even if these essential MIDI events cannot be recorded and looped, they certainly should not be blocked for playing over.

Please consider adding an OMNI recording option so that we can record MPE through this little jewel! That would be tremendously appreciated! It is as far as I can tell the only thing This little gem is missing.
