Description

Scan anything: objects, people, animals, plants, books, documents, text, and art. Scan Thing is the quickest and easiest way to capture and save anything around you. Capture books and documents with the original images intact and the text embedded. Save your scan as a single- or multi-page PDF with all its text fully searchable and selectable. Just the text? Frame a page, a document, a sign, or a receipt. Tap to extract the text. Tap again to copy it to the clipboard. Export is easy. Share via Airdrop or text. Save to your photo library or a folder of your choice. Or copy your scan to other apps. No nonsense. Just the app. You don't need an account to use Scan Thing. You don't need internet access. Your scans never leave your device and all processing happens on your device. Because your privacy is important (not to mention none of our business), we collect no data whatsoever and we don't use any third-party code. Your privacy is yours, and we think it should stay that way. A one-time in-app purchase. No subscriptions. No adds. No shenanigans. You can try Scan Thing for free, and, when you're ready, you can unlock unlimited scans with one payment.

And I paid for it to. But it only ever crashes when I try to load a pdf to it, and the quality of the OCR has turned from excellent to complete trash.

It only came to my attention recently that copying text from photos can scramble the sentence order. It's quite embarrassing to think about the numerous posts and submissions I've made in the past that must have been nonsensical.

  • Love the object scanning, but it has a limitation

The best feature of this app is the object scanning, and I think it does a pretty good job at it for the most part. There’s just one limitation it has that I wish would be improved. This limitation is that it struggles with objects which have holes in them, especially when there’s a lack of depth. So, let me explain what I mean by this. It will generally do a good job cutting out holes from objects that are standing up, such as the handle of a coffee mug. However, if it’s an object that you have to lay down on the table to photograph, such as your morning bagel, or the scissors that you will use on a crafts project, then it will only cut out the parts surrounding the object, but it won’t remove the holes of the object, meaning the table underneath will show through. In other words, the morning bagel that you photograph will be a circle without a hole in it. Your scissors for the crafts project also won’t have the holes of the handles removed. I understand that this app struggles with these parts because these objects are laying on the table where there’s a lack depth. However, I still wish there was a way to correct these mistakes afterwards. It would be helpful if there was an ‘edit’ mode where I could point to the holes on the object that the app missed to let it know that those parts need to be made transparent, and the app should then make the necessary changes. This is important because there’s many objects that need to be laid on the table in order to be photographed, and sometimes corrections have to be made in order to get the best results. With these things said, I still think this is a great app. I can see how it would be very useful for projects like journaling, photographing materials for crafts projects, and even creating thumbnails for videos.
