  • Pronunciation is incorrect-updated

I had to give this app only one star because the pronunciation it teaches is completely incorrect. If it were relatively close, then I’d give it more stars, but you can’t teach that “ma shlomka” is “ma shalawamka” and you cannot teach that “shlomi Tob” is “shalawamya tawab”. Even if the diacritic and vowel marks are absent in Ancient Hebrew, you can figure out that the pronunciation that the app teaches does not follow the phonological patterns of any Semitic language. Please fix the pronunciation, from the letter sounds to the greetings. Update: Thanks for your response, and no offense taken!! There are a few different dialects of ancient Hebrew, and it has some mutual intelligibility with other Canaanite languages of the time. Thanks to serious researchers in the field of Semitic linguistics, we can know the sound and structure of these languages to a large degree. The pronunciation in this app does not reflect anything close to the pronunciation of any of the ancient Canaanite languages or dialects. This is verifiable by anyone with an internet connection who chooses to do a quick fact check on this. Any standard pronunciation in a language is “fundamental,” but a teacher should choose at least one for students to focus on. As a researcher in the field of Semitic Linguistics, I can tell you that this pronunciation resembles an even further westernized version of Modern Hebrew where the “patah” and “qamaS” diacritics are used in excess to the point where it almost feels like the teaching is making a mockery of the ancient language. Furthermore, the grammar structure taught is also incorrect. Subject/verb placement in Paleo Hebrew is not correct in the app. In fact, the placement only resembles Modern Hebrew placement. My guess is that someone with an elementary knowledge of Modern Hebrew stuck the Paleo Hebrew letters on some lessons they made up and called it Paleo Hebrew. If you’re looking to learn from this app then do yourself a favor and turn the sound completely off, and just focus on the alphabet — maybe just the shape of the letters. But, if you want to sound silly and make it so that no one who really knows Paleo Hebrew can understand you, then turn the sound on and have fun! Otherwise, you can check YouTube for videos on Biblical / Archaic (Judahite) Hebrew to hear pronunciation and see sentence structure that is more accurate.

Honestly love the app but I have noticed that when look at certain letters, the meaning of the letters are all visible and cut off in the middle of a passage but so far so good.
  • Not for learning Biblical Hebrew

I had hoped this would be a good app for learning Biblical Hebrew. Turns out that it doesn’t teach the modern characters so it’s not going to be able to help me learn how to read Hebrew.
