I've recommended Highland 2 to every single one of my writer friends. Something about the formatting and ease of access makes long projects so easy. I love being able to use the sidebar to move between different sections or use the bin to save discarded but fun ideas.

I love how easy it is to build color palettes. Everything's intuitive, I can tell a lot of time went into thinking about the practicalities of writing. Also a one-time purchase!? Hallelujah.

I really love this app. I refer to it as Final Draft Pro-Lite. It's a great screen writing app with so many features. Came to say they fixed the Predictive text issue and it's super smooth again. Having used FD, Slugline, Scrivenir, and more this one is my favorite. Highly recommend.

Gosh, what left is there to say? It's learning curve is so low you'll have it mastered in 5 minutes, and your workflow can develop in as soon as the following 5 minutes. It's very low on distractions and has all of the features I need to keep track of pivotal details by way of leaving myself comments. I LOVE it's "text storage" area, which you can pluck and pull from to drag and drop in scenes and dialogue that may yet have use. I truly respect for the company for having released a free version that does everything you really need it to do. I didn't need their upgraded features at all, but I was so thankful I bought it anyway. This has replaced every other software I have in terms of where I write the actual scenes and chapters of my stories. While it is first advertised towards screenwriters, fret not! They truly thought about novel writers as well, it's all here!
  • The app worked great until it didn't

The free version had no issues. I wanted to support the company (didn't need their added options) so I picked up their paid option. PDF export stopped working. Deleted the app, reloaded, restarted computer, etc...no support, pdf still doesn't export.

I've been using Highland 2 for awhile, but this is the second time i've had pdf export issues. It's the only issue I've had, but can be fairly annoying.
  • Scrivener Rivial worth it's Salt

Been writing for years, been writing on mac for most of those years. Was a huge fan of Scrivener but as time went on it began to feel bloated. A million options, notes, views, and controls. I really like Highland's clean interface, simple export, and clean markup writing system. The ability to preview with the press of a button is wonderful. I can't recomend it enough. I will add that it's statistic tracking for goals and sprints could be improved a little. Deepened even to give better metrics and goals. I would love a daily word count like Scrivener, and a way to clear past goals or a deeper history of statistics but all and all it's like writing in Word but with all the tools to need to write a novel, screenplay, or just take notes. Give it a shot, I think you'll like it.

I would go PRO but for the lack of iOS and iPadOS apps.

Highland is a good writing enviornment, but falls short with its limited template choices for exporting to PDF in novel format. Currenly the only workaround for me is to paste into another application and export from there.
