I wish Amazon would take a little pride in their work. This app is clunky and makes the reading experience awful. For example, why does it turn pages randomly or turn multiple pages at the same time?

macOS has had dark mode more than long enough for an app from a major company like Amazon to support it. On a system where everything is generally dark, the bright window decorations and notebook are hard on the eyes. The content and library can be made dark but that doesn't affect the whole program, just those two views. It is also terrible with laying out the content in the window. The content always seems to take a little less than a third of the width of the window unless the window is extremely narrow. I should be able to set the window size and have the content fill it up. I get that it is trying to simulate a book page. That makes sense on a handheld device. It doesn't make a lot of sense on a large computer screen, especially my ultra-wide 21:9 apect ratio screen.

I have tried two times to download my kindle collections/books to this new app. Most of the books do not download and it has only shown 1 collection, but I have mutliple collections. When I try to import collections, nothing happens. Not happy!

This version wasn't working for a long time, but Amazon has apparently fixed it. It's much better than the regular "Kindle" app in that it actually looks and feels like a Mac app. It's easier to search, sort, browse, and change settings and the app just looks and feels better than the simplistic new app does.

For an app that I need every single day, this is a singular disappointment. It feels like Amazon (of which I am a shareholder, full disclosure) hasn't done anything to improve this app in years. Now today the app on my desktop is quitting every time I try to open a book, and the app on my iPad is suddenly not letting me open bookd when I search for them. If I have to read books only on my phone, I fear for my eyesight. Snap out of it, Amazon.

Having just updated this app, it no longer works and just hangs. It is clear that Amazon wants you to stop using this app and start using what is ostensibly the iOS app (which has it's own problems). Unless you are on an older Mac and are not planning to upgrade to the current OS, condiser this app "sunset" though the replacement isn't much better.
  • One of the worst apps I've used

Of the apps I've used from large companies, this is maybe the worst. At a point, all the highlighting I'd made in previous books moved over a few spaces so each side is only partially overlapping words. This is for ALL the highlighting in several years of books. I've had numerous lost notes. Text commands work differently, so when you use shortcut commands you're used to using in all other text, you end up shifting out of notes mode and losing all of what you typed. Because it's so automatic to do this, it happens over and over and you have to break your patterns, and then later in other apps feel anxiety when you needn't. The nature of the highlighting and notes is primitive and allows little customization (and this is true of Kindle in general). I prefer books in plain text documents or PDFs and always seek them out over Kindle. Worst of all, the notes you make ARE NOT SEARCHABLE. So if you take a lot of notes for a book, you have to go page by page, searching through each note, to find one you're looking for. Astonishingly atrocious app, and especially so considering it's from one of the largest companies in the world with such a stake in books.
  • Missing Collections

Kindle stores collections, and books, on a 26 item page. With more than 26 collections, only the second page will import to 1.40.2. Books seem to show up correctly.
