  • Horrible UI

My last review has somehow disappeared probably because it hit the nail on the head too well as to what is wrong with the app. I love this app, I’ve been using it for years hence why my passionate review. Here are the issues: 🔻 Still no dark mode in 2024 people have been asking for YEARS. You give us a colorful bright UI and STILL NO DARK MODE? What a joke. 🔻 There used to be a row suggesting a variety of archived crosswords. I used this SO MUCH because they were pre-downloaded for you and I wouldn’t need service to download any of the archived crosswords. Now that’s gone. 🔻 Recently played crosswords option is gone, no longer can you keep track of the crosswords you’ve worked on that aren’t within the last week. I have dozens of crosswords I’ve started and now lost to the archive. 🔻 The appearance is now bubbly and childlike and you have to scroll around a bunch to get what you want. Before, most of everything was right there on the screen when you opened the app. 🔻 They’ve simplified the appearance on the main screen so now you need to click more to see puzzle information. You used to be able to see your times for the puzzles but now that’s gone. Either click the puzzle or click through the leaderboard. Ugh. 🔻This UI is giving a ✨gen z✨simplification (note the recent The Morning article “Welcome to the Gen Z crossword era”) and honestly not a fan. Your users span more generations than just one.

Connections shows the instructions every time you open it Connections doesn't show when it's complete Mini crossword plays noise at the end but there are no audio setting for the app No customization of notifications or time Disgraceful for anything from a company of this size and charging this much for a subscription

I love this app, I find that when I am on my phone, I spend significant less time mindless scrolling social media and more time playing with the various though provoking puzzles on this app. That said - I would love to see the other games like Wordle, connections and spelling bee get leaderboards and the ability to view previous puzzles that you may have missed! Still excellent all around!

  • No Beta Puzzles?

I really liked this app — I play the puzzles each day and even pay for an annual subscription. So I’m really surprised and disappointed that there’s no access to Beta puzzles like Digits or Strands in the app. If I can play the daily puzzles and the beta games in my browser without a subscription, I don’t see much of a point to keeping this app at this point.

I saw you answer to another review. “This app is free to download!” Then what, a charge for continuing after how long? I somehow got roped into two different subscriptions, and am inundated with emails to get some other deal. I think I’m done with apps. I prefer hard copy crossword puzzles, don’t need the other time-suckers.
