I do not want to see this and my child will not see this either.
  • Landscape layout for home screen

I love that i can have my iPad propped up and read manga continuously page to page in landscape like i had the physical copies. It makes double page panels spectacular HOWEVER once you exit the manga the home screens force you to go back to vertical until you select another manga to read. I hope in a future update they make it so the whole app can be landscape. Now onto what everyone talks about in the reviews. I'm happy that there is a way to officially support the mangaka on an ereader platform but the mix of currency makes things confusing and frustrating especially when there are several chapters in the middle of a series that will be points only but the chapters previous and following are tickets. Hopefully one day they can switch to a subscriber based model like $0.99/month for 30-60 free chapters so people can keep up with their weekly manga and possibly binge a smaller series or some higher amount to get full access to everything. Other than that the quality is great and the variety is awesome.

    It’s good
  • Great content, horrible app

The content is high quality and plentiful, but the app itself is trash. Sure, reading is OK, but the payment system is total garbage. Even if I wanted to buy points, it errors out whenever I try. And you can’t share points between the app and the website. Whaaat?!? How does that even make sense?
  • Initially upset, but happy with updates.

K Manga is most valuable for addressing 2 specific needs: to read the first few chapters of series you might be curious about; and to buy new chapter shortly after the were published in Japan. I can’t in good conscience recommend this as a method to read entire series, as the cost would be higher than just buying physical editions… but for trying something new or spending a few dollars a month to keep up and support the latest releases, it’s perfect. Initially a lot of aspects of this app really disappointed me. Plenty of other reviews touch on all those reasons. But the most upsetting to me personally was that many chapters were split in half or more. I’ve noticed that this specific practice declined for some series, and I hope that trend continues. Additionally there have been dev updates that pleasantly surprised me: like adding comments. I really like to see reactions from other fans, so this is a nice feature. So while k manga wasn’t quite what I hoped for, I look forward to seeing how the app continues to develop… and frankly I’ll keep coming back as long as witch hat atelier is simulcasted.

I had heard kodansha made a manga app and was excited since i had a ton of mangas i wanted to read and downloaded it to see how much a subscription was to then be disappointed to see that it’s not a subscription but point based and i would have to pay for every chapter i read which made me back out immediately bc im not wanting to spend a ridiculous amount of money to buy singular chapters and whatnot
  • Point system is not good

Would gladly pay a monthly sub. The way things are now is not great

When I first saw that kodansha were releasing their own app with official translations I thought “ Oh cool they’re gonna do it like VIZ where we pay a monthly subscription to get access to all these chapters”. But no they had to do a point system where we would have to buy “points” in order to buy chapters to read. At that point it would be cheaper to just buy the volumes but for some of these titles they’re not even published in the west yet. Now VIZ has three different apps and with 3 different monthly services you can pay for, all together that comes out to about $8.99 for access to all three. I wouldn’t even be mad if kodansha charged like $10-15 a month, compared to marvel universe comic app at 19.99 a month I still think that’s a good deal because of all the content. This horrible gatcha system or model or whatever you wanna call it is just gonna give people more reason to read pirated content. I’m hoping soon that the developers see how much people don’t like this and change their business model soon because I for one really wanna read these stories and support the authors.
  • Poorly thought out

Probably my least favorite way to read manga. It’s the only way to support my favorite untranslated manga (Hajime no Ippo) for now though so I guess I’m stuck. I can accept they’re trying to make money with the points thing, and I appreciate that they give you a way to slowly accumulate points without paying, but the balance is terrible. You can get maybe ~20 points a day watching ads, and when chapters are ~80 points that’s just too long to wait. I think it’s probably better/cheaper to go elsewhere if you can. The comment feature would be cool, but it’s way too sensitive to bad language, and it’s not always clear why your comment is bad so you don’t know how to fix it. Ippo or no, I don’t know how long I can stick with the service.
  • Might be the worst app ever made

Whoever designed this app has a lukewarm IQ. Genuinely atrocious. I just wanted to read Skip and Loafer after watching the anime, but no. Some convoluted and ridiculous point system is how its monetized? What a joke. Viz and Shonen Jump are infinitely better for like 3 dollars a month. If there is a manga that is only on this app… you know what to do. Anything but use this steaming pile of garbage.
