The whole app is locked behind a paywall now. Can’t even learn anymore without paying.
  • A once-great app ruined by corporate greed

Prior to this week, I would have given Zogo a 5 star rating. I have used Zogo for several years and have enjoyed the experience, answering financial trivia and earning “pineapples” which I could then redeem for digital gift cards to sites like Amazon and eBay. My views changed this week when I was within 2,000 pineapples of reaching my goal of 100,000 pineapples (something I had been working on daily since LAST JULY), and I was shocked to randomly discover that after American Express had stepped in to sponsor the app last October, they instituted a 3 gift card limit to all users, effectively revoking the $100 gift card I had been working so hard to achieve (and eliminating my ability to redeem my now-useless pineapples on ANYTHING, not even donating to charity). This means that I have wasted literal HOURS, even DAYS, of my life for nothing. The flaccid, condescending response I got from Zogo, as well as the responses other users have gotten after leaving scathing reviews on the App Store, are essentially this: “For us, gift cards are an incentive, but not the primary goal. Isn’t financial literacy so much more important than a gift card?” Well, that’s fine and dandy, but what about people like me for whom gift cards were the primary purpose of using the app? Sounds like Zogo is just telling us all to go kick rocks since their bottom line is what matters most. This response stings even more knowing that the majority of the things I learned while using the app are either financial basics that I have long since mastered or subjects that I had no interest in learning about to begin with. If I had known about this change back in October, I would be a lot less angry than I am now. Sure, I’d still feel cheated out of the effort I had already invested, but at least I would have known to quit right away rather than continue to waste precious time that I will never get back. Zogo claims that an email went out informing us of this change, which is a bald-faced lie — I read my emails religiously (even my junk mail folder), and I most certainly would have seen an email pertaining to an app I use on a daily basis. Why couldn’t Zogo have taken a few extra steps to ensure users like me knew about this limit right away? Why not add a pop-up message within the app that appeared at least once a week for several months to remind users about a change this disruptive? Or how about designing a function where all users who have exceeded the 3-card limit can no longer accrue pineapples? Methinks Zogo wanted people to continue using the app, knowing that established users would bail out in droves if they knew they were ultimately playing for nothing in return. Look, I’ll be fair and say that this app does offer great content for people wanting a comprehensive financial education or to study specific topics (hence the 2-star rating instead of 1), but the change to the gift card system was COMPLETELY bungled, leaving users like me feeling absolutely robbed. Perhaps this was Zogo’s way of indirectly offering us another financial lesson, one that we’ve seen play out with recent issues like shrinkflation and the streaming wars: far too many companies who offer a great product will eventually, in the name of increasing stockholder profits and fattening their executive bonuses in the short term, strip away what made that product great, alienating their customers and destroying their business in the long term. Shame on you, Zogo, shame on you. And shame on American Express, too.

Legal robbery, only app that makes you pay to redeem rewards. Use to be free. The lessons are nice but not worth the fees. Can’t wait for a generic nonsense response from the developers.

When I got the app 2-3 years ago it was fully free. Now, if you try to sign up you have to pay to get access to the gift cards (main point) i’m disappointed

This app is honestly so fun! Lets be honest here, in the end whether i get money or not im still learning in a game esc style. People who say that they aren’t earning money quickly, it never advertises “quick money “ it’s helpful and helping you learn… get over it!!! If you know your stuff and YOU ACTUALLY STUDY! You will rack up points! So from a 15 year olds perspective it’s a good learning tool to use aside from the financial literacy class my school offers! It’s a good app regardless of money and or prizes! I know this sounds like a paid review or a robot but I truly enjoy this app, 💯 recommend if you want to learn more about how money works! P.s. i am actually retaining stuff so I’m actually gaining points… huh? Crazy how that works!

I downloaded this app awhile ago a year or two ago and I got enough points to redeem for a gift card but couldn’t do it bc I couldn’t verify so I redownload it today to try it out I had over 10k points but when I went to the shop I noticed it was different. I had to pay 4.99 to see the shop and redeem giftcard this is just honesty crazy how I have to pay now to get gift cards.

The app lets you do pretty tough quizzes and is well balanced in terms of rewards and points.. there are no rewards however. When you first join it says oh get these hundreds of gift cards we always have some! But as soon as you get enough points to get one all of a sudden they are completely gone all the time. I tried with 2 different accounts all the same experience. Only options you have to do with your hard earned points, is to either fund a war killing innocents, or to a charity that funds child abuse. Don’t waste your time with this app I thought it was good at first.
  • Teaches you a lot, but can be slow and laggy. Also issue with rewards

Update - if you’re going to download this app, keep in mind that they only allow you to cash out 3 gift cards. Rack up as many pineapples as you can, cash out for $10-20, don’t bother with $5. Also don’t bother creating a new account, they verify you via driver’s license (then maybe take the 3 gift card cap away? just a thought) This app does teach you a lot about finances. I’ve noticed that it takes up to 30 seconds to load each section. Also, I’m having an issue with rewards, and I really hope they add new modules soon. The old reward system let you cash out at $5, now it’s $10. I’m sitting around 8k pineapples with one module left to complete. I’ll be sitting there for some time if they don’t add more. It’s been like 2 months since leaving the above review. I’m stuck with 800 pineapples left before I can cash out. They’re adding new modules veeeerrryyy slowly, it’s going to be another 6 months before I’ll be able to get a $10 reward. Then Zogo is getting uninstalled. Oh, the app is still very laggy and takes forever to load each section.
