  • Powerful, too expensive, weak layout, arrogant developers

I've been using Ninox for 5 years now, and while many aspects of the app are very frustrating, I'll probably continue to use it. I came to it because FileMaker Pro was (and is) prohibitively expensive. On the plus side, Ninox has a lot of database power: fully relational, complex formulas. From manipulating, analyzing, organizing, and relating data, Ninox can do it all. On the negative side: layout and UI is extremely limited. You can barely adjust font and type sizes; everything is laid out on a grid—no freedom of placement. In general, it's kind of ugly to look at without limited ability to make it prettier. And then there's the cost: The basic version is inexpensive, but to use the advanced features and design/edit databases across multiple devices, you pay. And it keeps getting pricier. It started at $99 a year, which is fair. Last year it crept up to $140. And I was just informed that my current plan is being phased out and will be replaced by a new plan (with the same features) that will cost $24 a month. What!?!? $288 a year! That’s more than FM Pro. Granted, there is a cheaper version ($120), but that will require me to give up features I’ve been using for years. Which brings me to my final complaint: oblivious and arrogant developers. When I called them on this egregious price gouging, they simply said, “we’ll be sorry to lose you,” then, without my permission, canceled the automatic renewal of my subscription. And this isn’t the first time. They seem to think they know best, and user opinions about the app’s deficiencies are unimportant. For now, I’ll stay with the app mostly because it would take too long to convert several relational databases to FM Pro. But I’m on the way out of the Ninox door… 12-01-2023 Update: Still using this godforsaken program because there is, unfotunately, nothing else to use. Again, it's got some great features when it comes to functionality, but as UI, it's stuck in maybe the 1980s or so. For example, you STILL cannot simply copy and past elements on a page, or place in anything but a predefined grid. It's ugly and unintutive, and the developers simply don't care. Still waiting for somebody (please) to come up with a powerful AND user friendly database for MacOS.

So sorry, but I just cannot use this app. Before I delete it, I'll keeping playing with it and hopefully, maybe, find a way to use it. Instructions appear to be very limited.
  • Locked database?

It's an OK database. Documentation is a shambles. Steep learning curve and unusual syntax for scriptiing language. Spent most of an afternoon making a simple timekeeping database. It worked fine. Then I decided to create an account. Suddenly, I was unable to modify the database I just created. That made me angry. I hate coerced payments for software. This app does nothing that several other apps do better. I want somethinng dross-platform anyway. So I will just find another program to do the same thing. What a shame!

I like the fact that i pay one price. No subscription. The reason i did not give it 5 stars is because no dark mode. Hopefully it's added in a update or upgrade.

This has a lot of functinality. Lacks some documentation. I have some IT background and was able to create to invoices tracking. Once I figured out some of the calculation functionality it does all the calculations I need. This is a powerful program.

I give up. I have paid for 4 licences. Their system is very confusing becuase on my one account with two licences when I invite someone (myself, differnet email) its says I dont have enough licences. On the other account with two licences purchased I cant even work. The money is from my account but support is not helpfull.
  • Finally - ONE location for everything

I've made numerous attemps with MS Access, MySQL, SQL, Excell and so on to be able to make my own databases. But I never had the time to go all the way with any of them. I bought Ninox a couple of years ago and only recently did I dive in and learn how to use it - it has a simple learning curve. And finally I have ONE location where I can store everything - no more having things in Address Book, then in NOTES, then in Word Docs, etc. It's all in one place. And it's got lots of neat features - storing docs, pdfs, images, videos with specific fields. I listen to a lot of podacsts and I now have a podcast library of those I want to save. And with the click of a button I'm listening to them - through Ninox. This is a phenomonal find and I'm very happy with it.

The App Store entry doesn't mention in-app purchases, but this appears to be a 30-day free trial, and requires a subscription after that.
  • Personal Use - Research DB

I am using the software to create a DB to store research data that is then later used in creative writing projects. Having a lot of fun creating the research application because it is simple to create tables and relationsships.
