  • Useless and Awful

I bought this (expensive!) app to make my PDF text recognizable and searchable. Not only is that exceedingly difficult to do on this app, it reconfigures the entire pdf, ruining the document. I wasted $50 and 30 minutes of my time for an app I will never use again. A complete rip off. I should be refunded. The WORST OCR application.
  • Pro Pack?

I remember I bought this for $60 a few years ago. I tried to use it today and it asked me to purchase a pro pack. No thanks. Also, the OCR isn't that great anyway. Moving on.

I do a lot of reading of works published in the early 1900’s that I find using either “Project Gutenberg” or the the “Internet Archive”. Before version 3.5 Prismo struggled with the majority of the PDFs I downloaded from those sites. With this latest version, the acurracy has gone way up. I particularly appreciate the work done to recognize numbers although the alogorithm seems to be a bit too agressive as I’m finding many instances of “1n" for “in” and “1s” for “is”. (To the developers: Download “Science in the Changing World” from the Internet Archive and run it through Prismo to see this in action.) I also use Prismo to scan my out-of-print paperbacks that are falling apart, and have no complaints. I have no problem with the drag-and-drop interface to create a new project. This is probably due to my leaving the program running all the time so I can do live captures from web pages, which means the drag-and-drop interface is only a [⌘n] away. Your mileage may vary.
  • Nice looking interface, that doesn’t work

I wasted a nice chuck of change on this app. The simplest things: like applying a crop box to more than one image, cannot be done. If you have book images from a large book and want to apply the crop setting across a range of image?: plan on spending a LOT of time doing it, as you’ll have to set the same settings, image after image after image. The page curvature feature is almost worthless. You end up spending HOURS doing the simplest things and then, with very uneven results.
  • Good for JPGs etc, NO (simple) PDF SUPPPORT!

Following the review below I was contacted by support. So there's a way to OCR PDFs; you have to launch the app, close the open file window, create a new document then import the PDF. I'm not sure why you can't just open PDF files like it allows for image files but apparently a baked in workaround is as good as it's going to get. So yes, techincally you can OCR a PDF file with Prizmo... what you can't do is OCR a PDF easily. Add to that you have to pay again for the "pro" features like automator and batch processing I'll continue to use Adobe's Acrobat DC from my CC subscription. It's just easier... Yeah, let that settle in for a moment, an Adobe product is easier to work with... yikes. -------- Previous Review ---------- So this app mostly does what it says it does. It's a powerful version of the iOS app for sure. It will export a file it's scanned as a PDF but if you have a PDF in need of OCR, go elsewhere. It is amazingly lame that you can't scan a PDF in this app.

The only reason I gave it one star is because it actually did download, install and launch. After that…who do i see about getting my $53.55 back?

I’m really into digitizing all my stuff right now, and I’ve used this app to scan many books, magazines, and other miscellaneous odds and ends for years. So far it’s never failed to work extremely well. I scan directly to it from my USB scanner, and the scans come out crystal clear gorgeous. I especially like the gutter correction feature for books and magazines, and the software’s specific image adjustment feature for different types of scanned materials. For example, it has a specific image adjustment for when I’m scanning magazines, and the results look fanastic - it virtually eliminates the image on the other side of the thin magazine page from showing through. A similar image adjustment for scanned books makes them look almost like a page typed out in Word, instead of a photocopied scan. All in all this app works really well for my needs and I hope it’s around for a long time! I also have their matching iOS app, which works well due to their tight iCloud integration. I mostly use my Mac to scan things, but it’s handy having the companion app for quickly scanning receipts and such on the go with my iPhone’s camera. If I scan something on one device, it’s immediately visible in all the others, which is really neat. As for OCR, of course any software won’t get 100% of the text right, especially if the original scan wasn’t so great, but after not being successful at getting apps such as Adobe and Abby to work at all on my Mac, I couldn’t believe how well this one worked for me. After scanning, it usually takes no longer than 5-10 minutes to recognize one of my books (usually roughly 100-200 pages). The results vary depending on the original font, scan quality, etc, but it’s usually pretty good. The devs here have definitely done a great job with this and I believe in recognizing a job well done when I see it, hence this review. :)
