Description

With over 10 years in the App Store, Notion Mobile is a free, award-winning music composition tool for iOS, iPadOS®, macOS and more! You’ll effortlessly create dynamic compositions in traditional musical notation or guitar tablature with its intuitive touch-based interface and incredibly broad editing capabilities. With a user-friendly interface and simple interactive piano keyboard, fretboard, drum pad, and even optional Handwriting Recognition, Notion Mobile makes it easy to get started composing your music. You can also hear your music performed with the most realistic playback possible, using real audio samples recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. Notion Mobile is a native cross-platform app, meaning you can write anywhere on any device without requiring a constant Internet connection. And when you’re back online, you’ll be able to sync your work across multiple devices — either through your preferred cloud provider, or through the optional wireless transfer between PreSonus applications on any device. Start your work on one device and finish it on another. Once you are happy with your creation you can share the Notion file, or export as MIDI, MusicXML, PDF or as an audio file. Compose, edit, and play back your music performed with real piano and orchestral samples recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios — along with outstanding sampled guitar, bass, drums and other popular instruments. And when you’re ready for more sounds, you’ll find the extensive library of Notion Add-on Soundsets to purchase as part of the Feature Bundle. To save space, the initial app download contains just piano — you can then manage which of the bundled Soundsets to have on your device or keep in the cloud, just tap on Sound Installation. Notion has been featured in various Apple campaigns including the 2014 YourVerse television commercials and has won several awards, including a prestigious music industry NAMM TEC Award for Best Smartphone/Tablet App. What you get: Notion Mobile includes unlimited staves, comprehensive editing features and core orchestral and rhythm section Soundsets — all for free. You can optionally register (also for free!) to unlock an additional Soundset (containing Solo Strings, Classical Saxophones and Glockenspiel), the multivoice function that allows writing in up to 4 voices per staff, and access to the friendly Notion Mobile User Forum. Then for the full experience, either sign in with your Studio One+ membership or purchase the Notion Feature Bundle. This unlocks Handwriting Recognition, Layout Controls, all the Expansion Soundsets (including many auxiliary instruments and additional articulations and effects), additional audio export formats (m4a, OPUS, FLAC) and direct file transfer between any PreSonus application running on the same network (including Notion Mobile, Notion Desktop, and Studio One.) Free: Unlimited staves All editing features Core Soundsets Export as MIDI, PDF, wav, mp3 Register for free: Reward Soundset including Solo Strings, Glockenspiel, Classical Saxophones Access to the new Notion Mobile User Forum Additionally write for voices 3 and 4 in a single staff Export as MusicXML, Compressed MusicXML Feature Bundle (in-app purchase or sign in with Studio One+): Handwriting Recognition, powered by MyScript Available on iPhone, iPad and macOS (macOS with supporting graphics tablet or using Sidecar with compatible iPad) Automatic pen vs. finger recognition to switch between handwriting and edit mode Pressure-sensitive support for Apple Pencil Adjustable timer for Handwriting Recognition Override handwriting timer by double tapping Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) Layout Control All Expansion Soundsets Additional audio export formats (m4a, OPUS, FLAC) Direct file transfer between any PreSonus application running on the same network (including Notion Mobile, Notion Desktop, and Studio One)

This App makes me furious. I just failed my Chorus class due to my original music getting terminated without any reason. My words of anger are unexplainable and my day is ruined, Now I can’t get in the college I want because of this horrid system and this tragic incidence. Whoever made this app needs to reconsider their life choices!!

  • Still crashin’ after all these years

I’ve had Notion on various iPads over the years. And the one thing it will do, about 10% of the time, is crash. And since it doesn’t auto save, you’ll lose everything. It’s just a feature at this point. Not a bug. It reminds you what computers used to be like before everyone (well, except Presonus) realized that auto saving versions could be a thing. So I hardly use it. Then I get in a pinch, transcribe, go to export to PDF, crash the app (always crashes in new and interesting ways), and remind myself why I should just use Muse or any number of free online apps that don’t crash and have an infinitely better UI. For your sanity’s sake, don’t buy this app. Run away while you still can.
  • Waste of money, no save button

This app has no save option so if it crashes and spent hours of your time you will lose your work. Who makes an app with no save button?
  • Version 3 vs previous

I really like the previous version for many reasons except for the lack of ornaments input besides the trill and the limitation of 4 voices/parts. This update has some good features but it presents problem for more intricate notations. Older files look wrong on the updated version especially when the notes were shifted from one clef to the other. Joining the beams across clefs can be problematic. Overall it is satisfactory and I’ve used it to do hundreds of score.
  • Odd Copy/Paste, small errors, but Great Notation, Great sounds

Greetings! I have used this app in a professional capacity, which I was able to do because of the high quality samples of each instrument, and the accuracy of articulation and dynamics playback. Really awesome, plus the 32bit floating point audio files are pristine! After using the app a long while since the update, I have noticed some really annoying errors in this version. 1. Copy/Paste functions work for a moment but after a short amount of copy/paste executions it no longer works at all. I have to quit the app on my iPad Pro 6th gen, and reopen the same score to be able to continue copying and pasting. Weird and I don’t use it very often, but it’s a consistent error that I have to quit the app for to get it back. It’s enough of an error for me to consider just writing the same notes again. 2. Somehow you have made the articulations and dynamics writing more clunky and hard to execute compared to the previous version. It is unclear where to tap to enter articulations, on the note head or the note stem? No idea. Oddly I found that dragging my finger across a series of notes works to enter multiple articulations, but when I try the same motion using my trackpad (on the iPad Magic Keyboard) the articulation drag for multiple notes does not work. I use the built in trackpad so I can be more precise when entering articulations, since tapping a note head isn’t precise enough for Notion Mobile to enter the desired articulation. Dynamic entries and crescendo’s are more difficult than before. One has to be very careful with the note/dynamic/measure selection because there isn’t enough space in between each instrument line. Maybe if there was a text based way to tell Notion to increase/decrease from point A to point B? Or a line measure zoom in/out function? I commend you on the multiple ways you allow for dynamic graphics entry, but I think the app is getting confused. 3. Dudes! It is extremely difficult to navigate a huge score (400+ measures, 30+ instruments) in this app. Maybe I am trying to do too much with it, but sometimes I move the screen a little with one finger/two fingers and the app misinterprets what I want and I end up snapped all the way back to the beginning. I have tried to be calm when I move the score to a section, you have to touch/drag the score, stop then release your finger touch without moving it at all, and even then sometimes the app goes crazy and snaps back again. I think it has to do with how the app interprets the iOS snapback/rubber band feature. I should be able to tap/move my finger a smidgen or a lot then release my touch and have the score float in the direction I want it to go. It doesn’t. I have written a couple full scores and had to sigh through performing some of the above functions so that I can ignore this weirdness and finish the work I need to, remember the musical ideas I have, rather than having to troubleshoot. All in all, this app is fantastic and beats any score entry on most major DAW’s/MIDI sequencers. The articulations and execution of dynamics are the best I have heard, Logic Pro cannot reproduce them. As far as score writing and entry goes, it beats Finale version whatever and the older Notion for Mac versions. Great job!

I just lost two hours worth of work because it decided to close at random and not save anything! This has happened twice today!
  • Great but a bit tedious without writing tool

Great app, I’ve only used it for 2 sheet music projects and they have made my expedition for finding sheet music for these songs so much better. But there are a few things wrong. Without an Apple Pencil or other such tool, it’s hard to put the notes in the correct spot. Also I’m not sure if this is a client-side issue but the copy and paste function is strange. Sometimes it lets me copy and paste and other times it doesn’t. Overall great app, just some glitches and things that need to be worked out. I give it a 4 star rating not only because of it’s features and versatility but because it’s free!!
