  • Awful mandatory sign-in

Update: I’ve kept a subscription going to support one of the few non-rubbish news sources, but it seems they will prioritise customer profiling and the generation of marketing intelligence in their cash flow model so maybe they don’t need subscribers. I’m not convinced I will remain one when I have to sign in. Frequently. And it seems, if you use your apple account to sign in, Apple will share some information with the Guardian, not exactly something declared up-front. The Guardian will send you email, relayed through apple, and there’s no way in the app to deselect that. You can go to their website, and supposedlysign in with your apple account, but it’s unclear if that just shares more information with The Guardian, and whether there will be a way of unsubscribing. (There’s an unsubscribe button in the email, but, again, the risk of leaking details makes it a no-go to me.) Considering all the ”Tell us …” questionnaires The Guardian typically has, it’s odd that there is no way to point out factual errors or statistical misleading statements in Guardian articles. I’d imagine this would be the sort of things they would be genuinely interested in catching, but I suppose it requires too many man-hours to go through. This is mostly on content, not the app itself, but you can’t really separate the two: The Guardian has started down the road of offering certain articles only as audio or video. I for one don’t want another TV channel, so from my perspective it's another nail in the subscription coffin. You can add video/podcast to your front page but you can’t block it. That’s needlessly obnoxious. Some of The Guardians journalists do not meet the general level, instead produce ranting opinion pieces. No objection to that, but it would be nice if you could select the content you’re actually interested in, as in opt out of the pieces you have a fair expectation of being sub-par. Well, I guess with a paper-edition you don’t have that option either (but you’re at least spared video and podcasts). Minor technical issue: the before-after swipe pictures (say, two pictures of the same place years between, with a divider down the centre, you can move to reveal more of either) don’t work on iOS. They just don’t. It should show us both pictures side-by-side instead of making presentation an impediment to the message. The Guardian is supposed to be a newspaper. With respect to cookies, the Guardian uses such a huge number of trackers that saying yes/no to them individually is basically impossible, the only reasonable approach is to reject them across the board. There's a rendering issue where entire articles, including their headlines, will disappear from the front page when you scroll towards them. You can usually get them back by scrolling over, then back towards from the bottom. Minor annoyance only. The Guardian is one of the two readable UK newspapers and the app is still vastly better than Apple News, so money sort of reasonably well spent, I suppose, though, I’m considering a non-subscriber life.

The newspaper is a quality broad-sheet with a mostly authentic scholarly left tilt. It’s fueled by the need to present a credible counter weight argument against an embedded class conscious establishment. Arguably, it’s among the very best in the news media business.

  • Redesign gets an F.🔥❌ Newspaper still an A+! ✅💯

Alas, the redesign is a mess. 1️⃣—-> Hiding sections leaves large bolded headings that waste space. They should vanish entirely. 2️⃣ —> Font control is convoluted. It's split between the Control Center for headlines and within articles for their text. 3️⃣ ——> The font size jumps too much — we need finer control. 4️⃣ ——> In addition, if you enlarge the font size for the main page, the organization changes dramatically. It goes from a normal mixed newspaper style to a blocky, uninviting, 2-across rectangular grid — far too uniform and industrial looking. 5️⃣ ——> The Guardian now imposes its own main page organization, and the section order cannot be changed. That is a major step backwards. WE FIND OURSELVES READING FEWER AND FEWER GUARDIAN ARTICLES EVERY DAY! Surely, that's not not what you want! 6️⃣ Your “My Guardian” section is NOT an alternative. It has an enforced layout, blocky and grid-bound, and includes Podcasts for EVERY section even if we don't want them! 7️⃣——> Today, March 26, your Home page displayed photos for a story that blocked the headlines! 8️⃣—-> Which designers thought these changes were a good idea? Which “Engineering Managers” signed off on them? Please listen to your readers and app users and fix these issues, even reverse your actions. Your email on the changes offered no justification. Seriously, you are ruining a wonderful source of news, committed journalism, and skilled reporting.
  • Paywall = barriers for low income workers

I used to enjoy reading the guardian, and as a low income individual, it was the only high-quality news I could afford. Now we have limited articles we can read per 30 day period. It is such a shame to keep information behind paywalls like this, and I’m incredibly disappointed in this news organization for not finding a better way to allow people like me access.
  • Center right, Slipping downward.

These days the paper is slipping. News is less in-depth, more center right wing. The price is slipping upwards. The coverage is pretty much as with other pay wall news papers.

Used to be able to read the news with this app. Now, it forces me to a page to register - despite their website allowing unregistered users to view the news… I now use this app for it’s notifications, and if I see a notification for a story that sounds interesting, I’ll google it… Useless.
  • Recaptcha blocked access

Guardian is blocking my access. Indicates a recaptcha failure, but there is no method to address the problem - I’m simply blocked. No idea what that’s about, but Guardian needs login architecture that includes a method for users (who aren’t robots/AI/etc.) to get this problem in their system corrected.
  • Terrible Mess

As a supporter of the mobile app since 2018, I find the new format so disappointing. The new Home Page is a jumbled mess, and the My Guardian section is completely worthless. Why ruin a good format simply for the sake of change?
