  • Solid 4

I've been using this app since Grooveshark shutdown (don't remember exact year, but it's been a long time) and I feel pretty good about Deezer. There are some minor issues, like constant notifications about app satisfaction and loading circle after closing this window, that would hang up the app on iPad mini. But that happens not that often and restarting the app helps. Other than that it's working great, thanks.

Deezer has mostly only improved over the years. I’ve been with them since the beginning and have tried its competitors along the way. My main reason for staying is the interface. Though I wish the heart (like) and X (dislike) buttons were a bit larger on the screen, everything else is great and easy to navigate. Music selection is almost as good as the rest but I have pretty niche tastes so some things available on other services can’t be found here. My last issue is the “Flow” feature which is similar to Pandora in that it plays what you like and helps you discover more. Unfortunately, the algorithm hasn’t been successful at all in finding anything new I like where as a few years ago I discovered loads of new artists thanks to this feature. I’m also getting suggestions for mainstream artists that are not in line with anything I’ve favorited. How many times do I have to dislike songs by Justin Bieber, Wiz Khalid’s and DJ Khalid before you’ll stop recommending them? That aside, I love Deezer, and I’ve got most of my friends and family using it and they do too.
  • Good but not quite great (Flow)

I love the flow feature. However it likes to play certain songs (not even “favorites”) over and over while never playing certain “favorites”. Flow also plays whatever I’ve listened to recently, but just because I like to workout to 90’s hip hop doesn’t mean I want that in my Flow. It would also be nice to have degrees of how much I like a song (current options are only Like, Dislike, or neutral by not rating); a 5 star scale or more would be helpful. I’m not sure if I can Like genres as a whole. It would also help to Dislike bands before they end up in my flow (or maybe I don’t know how).

  • Good Spotify alternative with glaring flaw

I gave Deezer a shot because I was getting sick of Spotify's ever degrading user experience. Deezer selling points include: - 'just played' playlist let's you EASILY revisit songs you've recently played. Hello jamming, goodbye searching (like on Spotify or Apple's stripped down music player). - you can heart songs! No longer must you sort them into a playlist just so you can find them again. Spotify stupidly eliminated that feature. - cross fade is great -the lyrics are easily available instead of unwanted trivia like on Spotify Now for my biggest complaints: - tapping a song in search results overwrites whatever queue you had, causing frustrating losses. -search page wastes 1/4 of your screen with blank space, making your big phone screen useless - YOU CANNOT GO BACK IN FLOW MODE, so if you liked a song, you'll never see it again. And this is unbelievably frustrating and insulting, because they could just as easily respect the user and let them go back. So it seems to be a case of Deezer putting their agenda over that of the user--which is fine-- but if they want to compete with Spotify, they should consider a more delightful user experience. A final thing I appreciate about Deezer is you can find REAL user-generated playlists, in contrast with Spotify who only showcases Spotify-made playlists. So in this regard Deezer feels much more authentic. I might even switch from Spotify to Deezer in the long term, but it will take a lot of getting used to the arbitrary inability to replay songs from my flow. I have high hopes for Deezer but they really need to prioritize user experience before I convert fully.
