Description

The Minimoog Model D App is a software transmutation of the world’s first portable synthesizer, the Minimoog Model D®. Anyone can jump in and play with over 160 included presets or lay fingers to the controls and begin exploring vast magical realms of creative potential for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Mac. The Minimoog Model D App incorporates a number of inspiring sound creation tools and capabilities not present on its analog antecedent. New functions include the ability to play chords with up to four-note polyphony, an easy-to-use arpeggiator for rhythmic pattern creation, a real time looping recorder with unlimited overdubbing capacity, a tempo-synchronizable stereo ping pong delay module, and the Bender -- a wide-range stereo time modulation effect module. The Minimoog Model D App also supports AUv3 Audio Unit extensions, which allows multiple instances of this powerful instrument to be used simultaneously within compatible iOS apps supporting AUv3. A BRIEF HISTORY Introduced by Moog in 1970, the Minimoog Model D served as the archetype for all electronic keyboards that followed. It gave users the ability to design their own sounds, translating imagination into reality. The Minimoog’s portability, affordability and accessibility made it the go-to instrument for musicians looking to expand beyond the traditional sounds of the time. Bernie Worrell used the Minimoog Model D to establish Parliament Funkadelic’s futuristic funk sound. Kraftwerk employed the Minimoog Model D on the successful concept album Autobahn, sparking an entirely new genre. Gary Numan replaced his live band’s guitars with Minimoog Model Ds, creating the prototype for industrial music. The classic sound of the Minimoog Model D can be heard on Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic; Detailed in the mini-doc series “A Brief History Of The Minimoog”. I love this app very much. The one thing I wish it had was the ability to zoom in on areas of the interface. Not easy to see if you have a small screen.

This synth is riddled with crashing in Logic which is frustrating becuase it sounds good. My Mac is a really fast video editing mac. Sound work should not be an issue.

Playing three keys simultaneously causes the sound from the app to get all glitchy. A keyboard app doesn’t really work if it can’t play chords. The app used to be fine.

GREAT APP! Fantastic sounds! But, how do you save presets now the button is gone?
  • Feature rich, great sound, best with MIDI keyboard

BUG REPORT: shared my favorites folder from my iPhone to my Mac, created a new sound and when I tried to save it into the same folder it copied the parameters from the next preset in the folder instead… annoying! I’ve spent a lot of hours on this app messing around and still haven’t explored everything yet. You have a lot of sonic freedom and the ability to replicate a lot of sounds. The preset packs are fun but are hard to navigate on my iPhone. They allow you to explore a lot of sounds quickly that you can later tune to your liking. I’ve mapped my MIDI keyboard knobs and it works well (but not perfect). Another thing I discovered on YouTube is that you can plug your iPhone or iPad into your Mac and use in Logic as an external midi device, although you have to manually setup every time.

I started using this for convenience in lieu of my sub 37. In 2022, Moog released a wrapper that allows this application to be used as a plugin inside of a DAW, and in my case, Ableton. It worked great in 2022. For whatever reason, in 2023, any project file that contains an instance of this application instantly crashes. I have sent feedback to Ableton, and they have not been able to repair this issue. It works great, when it works, but it hasn't done that in a while

I think Michael Iceberg had one of the original physical versions of this in the Iceberg Machine back when he was performing at WDW. I bought this while working on re-creating some of his music - think this is about as close as I'm going to get to his sound. "Synnnnnthesizers...!"
