Description

Typewriter. Corkboard. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop. “The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.” - Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith GROW YOUR MANUSCRIPT YOUR WAY Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener lets you break up your writing into sections as small or large as you like. At its heart is a simple ring-binder metaphor—gather material and switch between writing, notes and research with ease. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Compose your text in any order you want—write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. SEE THE FOREST *OR* THE TREES Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: hammer out every last detail before typing a word, or carve out a draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are integrated with an easy-to-use project outline, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop. RESEARCH WITHIN REACH Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right alongside what you’re working on. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Or check for consistency against an earlier chapter. GETTING IT OUT THERE Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, turn your manuscript into a beautiful ebook or PDF, export to Word, or simply print it out. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy. Scrivener’s users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won’t tell you how to write—it just provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing. • Amazing but 1 thing

I've been using this program for years. It's awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone who does a lot of writing. BUT my problem is lately it keeps crashing. Thankfully, it backs up automatically. So far I haven't lost anything, but it's really frustrating.
  • Sync works until it doesn't. Know where your backups live before you need them.

    * Using scrivener for a book * Scrivener isn't perfect. * Scrivener has a number of fail-safes. * A 4 from me is like a 5 from other people. I want to leave room for improvement. I use two machines to edit. I had a blow up where sync stopped working. Scrivener had been really good at warning when files were out of sync, but then failed to warn me. Somehow a file from two months prior, overwrote a file from today. I lost a lot of work. As I started to piece through the mess, it became pretty clear that iCloud was part of the issue. I wrote a scathing review at first, but as I keep looking around, I find ways that Scrivener backed up recent revisions and ways to get back most of the work I thought I had lost. From a UX standpoint: * As a user, I would like to be clued into my backup location when Scivener detects problems like recovered files and broken/missing search indexes so I'm not left freaking out when something goes wrong * As a user, I want sync to be bulletproof, so I don't freak out when data is lost -Part of the problem could be overreliance on the tool to protect our precious work.

Not appreciative of the fact that files were held hostage, unable to open unless update accepted. Even though it was a good app, that requirement felt like coercion. Who owns the files?
  • No answerw, no refunds.

Scrivener boosted my writing productivity immensely. I like to spread out on three monitors, but even mobile, it keeps me on the rails. And there ARE rails. There is a learning curve. But it's worth more investment than programs such as the undeniably powerful, yet hostile, MS Office. Over the years, I've found stability admirable, Output mostly reliable, and DropBox backups consistent, though I mostly use a laptop. I hope I'm not disappointed by 331.
  • Great, but...

It's an amazing app, but a recent issue has just started happening. Whenever I go to change the highlight color, the app quits itself and I lose my spot where I left off. It's very annoying and hope it gets fixed soon.
  • Best app for novels and research projects, period

I've tried every Scrivener lookalike and copycat. yWriter, Manuskript, Bibisco, Ulysses, you name it. Many of them are decent, but Scrivener is the ONLY app I will be using for as long as I draw breath. Why is Scrivener so amazing? -Gets out of the way and lets you focus on writing; Scrivener doesn't waste your time with gimmicky features or fancy formatting, it just lets you write. It lets you use as many or as few of the features as you so desire. -Distraction free writing with typewriter mode -Unparalleled organization -Virtually bug free (had only a handful of small bugs in my time using it) -Devs are very responsive and helpful; each time I've reached out to them, they helped me step by step until I fixed the issue -Pay once, keep forever; Scrivener is a one-time payment, and you get the full update cycle of your version until the next version releases--and in some cases, like with me, they give you the latest version free of charge. -Works with just about any cloud sync software (I've used OneDrive and Dropbox without issues) -Crossplatform; just about every Scrivener copycat/lookalike is Mac only or Windows only. Scrivener works flawlessly across Windows, iOS, and Mac through your preferred syncing solution. Only thing missing is an Android app. -Files are unencrypted, allowing you to encrypt them at your end whether that be on Windows or Mac. Scrivener is not trying to be some bloated freemium software that loses sight of its goal over time. It is trying to be a reliable writing app with minimal frills and useful tools--which you can ignore if you just need an easy writing experience. It avoids the SaaS craze these days by giving you lifelong software that you choose how to back up and sync with other devices. In their own words, they're trying to get out of your way and let you write. The only thing that could be improved would be to have an Android app, but as an Apple-only user, I couldn't care less.

I love Scrivener - it's a super-powerful tool for writing large projects. I can't imagine writing a book any other way. I also love the ability to share the project with the mobile version - both iPhone and iPad - so that I can drop in changes and notes when I'm on-the-go or traveling. Since the Ventura update, Scrivener can no longer show the difference between snapshots of documents, a critical feature. This has been a problem for months and Scrivener Mac has not been updated for over a year. Please fix and update!
