  • Excellent app but not perfect

Writing kanji is the best method for me to learn and this app does a tremendous job at what it does. I use it daily and my kanji has greatly improved. I look forward to using this app even if reviewing the kanji takes me one hour long to go through. However, this app is not perfect and can be frustrating at times. The slightest drawings on certain kanji is so sensitive. A slight movement in the wrong direction or not enough length in the correct direction and you immediately have to start over. It’s very harsh and it really annoys me. I understand strokes have to be drawn a certain way but even when I do it correctly, it sometimes doesn’t recognize it or counts my stroke as incorrect. This is the worst thing about the app. Another thing is definitions. You have many kanji with the same meanings such as house, building, departure, open, etc. but never explained in context. I’m forced to look them up on my own to tell difference when it could have been written better by the developer. Just my two cents since if this was someone who is just learning Japanese, it can be very confusing. Other than that, please keep updating. It is worth every penny but this can be the best kanji in the App Store if the author still cares to just fix some things.
  • Awesome App

I love this app. People are way too nitpicky, this app is awesome. I’m amazed at how accurate it is for determining if a stroke is correct or not (the app is generous in terms of accepting strokes, which is definitely preferred as I don’t have to stress about matching the outline exactly). I didn’t enjoy learning kanji before this app, and now it’s one of my favorite, most relaxing hobbies. Working through JLPT 4 now, hoping to finish JLPT 1 in a couple years. Would love if there was an extension of this app with more advanced kanji beyond JLPT 1 for when I finish these lessons. Two small things: JLPT 4, lesson 44 only has three of the four words included. Also, the app frequently marks me wrong when I am drawing the second stroke of 心. This also occurs in kanji like 意. Thanks again, love the app!
  • Good but…

It’s a good app but I do have some suggestions for improvement. During review, for kanji that have the same reading, it’s difficult to figure out which kanji it’s asking for to write (e.g. そなえる which can be written as 備える or 具える). I have to guess all the time which kanji I’m supposed to write for these kanji that have the same reading. I think there should be at least a bit of a hint I which kanji the user is supposed to write. For some strokes, the “tails” of some kanji are not easily accepted (e.g. for the kanji 号, the last stroke has to be perfect or it has to be in a certain angle (I think) before it gets accepted). It happens to quite a few of the kanji I’ve encountered so far (at least up to N3). It’s just annoying, especially if the user already knows how to write it.

Good if you don’t mind paying 11 dollars
  • Kanji stroke detection bugs

There are bugs that pop up. For instance, I can write the kanji for week 週 correctly but it keeps stating that it’s incorrect. I can’t get passed the review because of this.
  • Unusable because of broken review system

There are some kanji where the evaluation system is completely broken, in particular, 羽. Because of the way the review system works, it has become impossible for me to review kanji now. This was a great app, but the lack of response to small issues like this bring it down to a 1 star.

I overall do really love this app and think its a great price. Like others have said, there are a handful of hiragana errors but to be honest that part is easy to look past. I do really wish there was a way to individually reset SRS level for kanji. I don’t want to reset all of my progress but would like to reset a few that I feel need to be added in more often to relearn better; similar to bunpro or wanikani. Would be a great addition but seems this app doesn’t get many updates lately.

This is a wonderful app to learn Japanese.. but it only lets achieve level one.. the others you have to pay for… I wished it was for free.. or at least have two options. One for those who want to pay and one for those who can’t but still wanna learn. 😞
