  • Subscription for journaling is total BS!

    By Annieluvski
I open the older version of the Day One app to jot down a cute thing that my kid said... come to find out, the developer did not update the app but instead created a whole new app with a ridiculous subscription! 😡 This makes me feel very frustrated and angry because now I CAN NOT retrieve any of the information that I had logged into Day One!!!!! How frustrating is it that I CAN NOT RETRIEVE any precious memories and quotes from my kids all because the developer wanted to put some money in their pockets for a journal?! Would you pay someone to keep your memories in?! Nope, I don’t think so! SO FREAKING DISAPPOINTED!!!!!

  • Best App in Store!

    By Maui Kid
DayOne has got to be the best app in the Apple Store. I’ve been extremely critical of the app while going through some of its changes over the years, but I have to say the developers have done a great job. DayOne is beautiful, reliable and has lots of features. I have never had a problem with losing data or completing backups for safety. The developers also respond to questions and are always available very quickly. 10 Stars ⭐️ if I could!
  • On my top 5 favorite app list!

    By Abell1989
This is a great app! I don’t usually write reviews, but I sincerely enjoy it and it has helped me journal more because of how easy it is to use—and easy to organize different journals and tag specific things within one journal. I like being able to upload pictures in order to make the entry even more special. Suggestion: would sincerely appreciate being able to upload videos—even if they were small short videos to help recapture special moments. Great, great, app. Thank you, Day One! Really!
  • Randomly deletes entries right after you finish writing them

    By Wesleybanana
I’ve been a fan of Day One for five years now. I’ve used it everyday to record my life and absolutely love this app. At least, until recently. They used to have an issue with entries disappearing. The problem mostly went away until the last few months, when it started happening again. I’ll write 500-1,000 words and then as soon as I click “done” the entry reverts back to only the first few sentences. I would understand if this was a rare bug, but it happens on average in about 1 in 10 entries. It’s gotten to the point where I have to back up each entry separately to avoid losing data, which defeats the purpose of using the app. Is spoke to customer service and they literally just told me that they know this happens and they’re working on it. I find it difficult to believe that it takes a YEAR to work out a basic function of the app, especially now that we’re paying the developers annually to work on this kind of thing. I have no problem paying you guys on subscription as long as you’re bringing value to the table, but when you’re spending hours on adding fancy colors while ignoring basic UX, it really has me questioning whether my money would be best spent elsewhere. Please stop prioritizing frills like graphs and word counts and fix the basics first.
  • Almost there

Ugh. Day One is, on the one hand, one of my favorite apps, and I use it daily. And I’m happy with the subscription model. But every word of my review from when they first introduced the subscription model still applies: no audio recording, no publishing, no web version, and typing still is a frustrating experience compared to typing in other apps. This slow development is increasingly frustrating. My original review: I love Day One and the ability to look back on entries by date and location. I'm happy to pay a subscription model, but hope that means they come through with new features soon, namely audio recording and publishing to a blog (now that they're working on a web version I hope they simply allow you to make a journal public/password protected so anyone can view it). Those are long wished for/promised features that would make my workflow even simpler. Finally, I still experience typing lag issues on both my iPhone and iPad pro. I type long entries, so generally use Drafts 4 and then import the text. These typing bugs have persisted for quite awhile. Pretty minor overall and may only affect longer entries or entries with a lot of photos.
  • Best Journaling Option Available

    By courtneyk93
I can’t say it enough. Day One is the best journaling option you’ll find. It’s secure, backs up to iCloud, allows for multiple journals, stores photos, and it’s just so convenient. You really cannot go wrong using Day One.

I like it , the best!
  • I assume the subscription model is to pay for all the fake positive reviews?

You can cut/paste “we are a small self-funded team” over and over and again it will not make a dent in the distrust many feel over your business ethics. Dropbox and iCloud sync worked fine, there are going to be occasional hiccups with any of these services, but they function and are far more secure than anything you could muster even with subscription revenue. You lie over and over, wring your hands and declare that we had no choice! We had to do this for your benefit, you weren’t safe before! It was not to our benefit at all. You had multiple solutions that worked and you removed them to create both a justification for your subscription model as well as taking complete control over our sensitive data, which you have proven you are more than willing to hold hostage for a buck. I understand needing to make a living, and there were multiple ways your company could have gone. You could have offered in app purchases for new features, you could have have offered a “Pro” service that gave people more options for a subscription while maintaining the bare bones for those who gave your business it’s earliest legs. Instead you took away what they once had. You can say “No, you can always use the older version as long as you want”, yet in the same breath (or a bad review response) you remind us that one day that version will die along with our aging iOS. You aren’t offering a solution or a choice, you are offering a prolonged slow death so that a person nearing the obsolescence of his deepest thoughts will have to face the reality of either paying for your extortion or losing everything they once trusted you with. You dangle people’s precious memories and heartbreak like a carrot. You like your journal, right? Then you will have to pay and pay and pay again. That is why we find your responses canned and disingenuous, this is why I will never give another dollar to your service. I hope others follow suit. Response to Developers Response: Yes, two years of development for a product that does mostly the same, only now you control the data entirely and have to pay for banks of servers and storage to handle what was not a problem before (Dropbox and iCloud sync). You created a problem to justify needing more overhead, therefore needing a constant revenue stream. Brilliant. Also, don’t blame or punish your customers for the business model you originally created. Not good form. You are a journal app. You are not Adobe or Microsoft. I have choices. Goodbye.
